After a water change last night, I noticed eggs on a piece of drift wood. Looks like I have at least one female. Mom and Mom or maybe Mom and Dad are diligently fanning eggs. We'll see - I really don't want fry right now.

The eggs made it to morning. I'm sort of hoping they eat them today - but I do have a plan if they end up being viable.

Beautiful fish! I too think a mom and a dad. looks like mom watching the eggs and dad watching her, but hey only a guess, since I could never say with certainty just by seeing a pic.

Jeff - I may take you up on that! I have a long way to go to see if they even make it - but I'll keep you in mind! I have a 55 with some other discus in it, that I can pull the parents into and I can raise the fry for a while in the 29 - but I don't have space for more fish. Haven't had to hatch brine shrimp in years. We'll see how this goes.

At least wait to see if you get wigglers so you can confirm them. Then you can take your time.

Yeah - I'm not counting eggs before they hatch. 2 days with eggs, no white ones, many are bright orange and some are dark orange. The dark unfertilized eggs have collapsed. Still look like a good number of bright orange ones.

We'll see what happens. Could wake up tomorrow and find no eggs.

Quite a few eggs have been eaten. They continue to care for what remains pretty diligently - I suspect nothing will happen with these. Actually pretty good news for me! Not really set up up for breeding here.

All the eggs are gone - good news for me! For their first spawn without being setup up for - they took good care o the eggs. They laid them on a piece of drift wood that was right in the current of the HOB output. Probably tough to fertilize in a current.

Anyway - I'm just growing these two out in order to get them into the main tank. Not looking to breed.

It was fun to watch them though!

Well at least you know you have a possible pair for the future if you decide you may want to breed. Hopefully they won't raise cane in your community tank when they get there.

Lots of bright orange ones this time at the end of day 2. They've eaten the dark brown ones. They are very attentive this time - seems to always be one or both with the eggs all the time.

Hmm - I'm thinking these are both females. What should I see on day two if the eggs are fertilized? They go from dark brown solid when they are laid, to a bright orange color - I don't see the telltale black dots in the eggs. What do you think?

Adam, believe you are right. I do not believe those eggs are any good. When the eggs look like yours in the above pictures my wilds will eat them. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.

Blessing in disguise is right! I'm not setup for breeding and really don't have the time. I've lost three staff members in 30 days and one of the jobs was a senior programmer position. I am, unfortunately, the only person in my organization who speaks Java and C# - so along with my day job I'm now the break fix man for about 25 deployed software projects written by this guy over the last 7 years. And you know - no matter how good the programmer - taking over someone else's code sucks.

I'm a little worried about putting these two egg laying females into my main tank with 2 RT and a PB - not a good combination for fry I wouldn't think.

Nice looking fish Adam. These are LSS so they'd mix with a Red Turq, maybe not the best choice but you could work with it.

These two spawn about once a week. This is clutch number 4 for these guys. I'm guessing a TDS of 125 isn't low enough to actually hatch these eggs. They turn bright orange after about 2 or 3 days and then they eat them. We watched the female lay eggs last time and the male followed her fertilizing. It seems they are doing the right things... Happy to keep the TDS at this level and let them do their thing.

Trying to get pictures of the breeding tubes:

I think this is a female - watched her lay a string of eggs

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/13/neby3usu.jpg

Perhaps a male or maybe another female - This one appeared to be fertilizing.

What do you think?
