New Batch just attached Saturday. My main goal here is to compare the offspring to the mercury x ARM batch and see if I get any simular offspring except in yellow.

thats is because this particual pearl diamond has been used as a foster several times and has gone from yellow to orange in the process. That and i likes color flakes.

Getting fed BBS:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKyNjY6td5M&feature=player_detailpage

Currently getting fed BBS 4 times a day. Feedings are typically at 6:30 am, 4:15 pm, 7:30 pm, and 11:00 pm. Two 50-60 % water changes a day, one at 5:15 pm and one at 11:00 pm. Water change amount will increase to 80% when I begin with solid foods. I have one HOB filter and one sponge filter in the tank. temperature is set to 82.5. I use 100 % RO water with just enough RO waste water to bring my TDS up to around 70 ppm. PH is typically at or about 7.6-7.8, but I honestly don't monitor this much at all.

If you look closely a few are starting to take a preference to mom and dads food on the right, pecking away at the cube of FDBW in the feeder. Typically within a few days of this, they will all develope this preference and at that time I transition to foods other than BBS.

I apologize for the late update, but photobucket has been having some real issues of late and I could not upload these friday. Starting to see some difference in size, but this is mainly due to the fact I have two different types of offspring from this cross. Different strains grow at different rates and as you can see the pigeon bloods seem to be outpacing the browns. Currently down to 30 fry (I think, hard to get a good count on these little guys).

I was asked to provide details on how I went about choosing the 30, and to be honest with this batch I haven't yet seen any defects yet and the sizes are consistant between types. For this reason the 30 that were left as I was trying to remove some from the tank are the 30 I am going to go with. It is very hard to almost possible to pick the "30" best at this size, and while I do typically cull at this stage I am only looking for obvious defects.

The most interesting concept of all of your threads concerning contestant fish is simply that your fry is still with the parents. It is fundamentally different than all others in the contest and will likely be an interesting data point to consider when the contest finishes. It had to be mentioned I think....

Not all but a close majority are very skittish and look uncomfortable in groups of 8 at this young age. Likely if the groups were larger it would cut down on the stress. I have to say I really like your savvyness in keeping your groups of 8 (3 of 4) with at least one parent. They look less stressed to me and overall in great health. Just my observations. This contest is great for ideas. I think you just have me a great one!

The one to watch is in the third photo front and center. Although you can no longer tell, that is a 14 bar fish. Possibly a PB (hard to imagine with that color it not being a pb) but so far clean as a whistle. That and another 14 bar /grey based that did not get a decent profile picture this time around (he is in the third picture facing the back of the tank).

LOL, you made me go double check, your right.......I think :) I can conclusively say tht after chasing him around the tank a bit (to stress him a little) he has more than 9 bars, but I cannot conclusively say he has 14....lol I can count 11 for sure, so I am thinking the other three I just cant pick out (it is hard under the color). I missed this when I selected my eight, working with these crosses I tried to get a representative of each phenotype and not neccesarily the biggest of the batch. The only exceeption to this was batch 1, in which they are all the same phenotype.

No worries, I did not take it that way at all. It's funny, until recently this batch did not get a lot of comments, and it has been my favorite batch of the group. but I could never capture what I was seeing in person on camera. Having worked with the Asian Mercury in the past, I knew this batch would be the "wild card"......you just never know what your going to get.

Really nice Rick. Nice shapes and health, and an interesting mix of discus :)

I wonder if the APD or the mercury is a snakeskin? or perhaps both are! The bd gene would mask the effect of the ss gene in the mercury, and the no pattern gene of the APD would also effectively mask the ss gene. Nice and interesting cross.

nc0gnet0
11-29-2012, 09:43 AM
Rod,

Almost positive it is coming from the APD, a previous cross with an ARSG to the same mercury female resulted in no SS offspring.

Thanks Eddie! While this batch doesn't get nearly the attention that the DA x BD's do, it has become my favorite batch. If you look closely at picture one and a few others, you can see the snakeskin pattern starting to come in nicely on a few of the fish that are 14 bar. A golden yellow snakeskin might be unique.

Yup, the sheen comes from the Mercury which makes them (mercury's) fun to work with if you don't mind culling some fish. It is hard to capture on camera however (flash washes it out). I get the same "sheen" on the white in a previous cross with a mercury that produced these:

Just moved these guys into a larger tank the day the pictures were taken and they were a bit skittish, so I threw the tacky fake rock in there to settle them down a bit. It will be gone in a day or two, was trying to get a better picture of the SS pattern coming in on one of them but she wasn't none to happy about it. hard to capture, seems to wash out with the flash.

There is a big difference in size. Why you ask? ;) A lot has to do way back when I picked my eight. Rather than try to pick the nicest/biggest eight of the batch I opted to represent each of the different phenotypes this cross produced. Many times when you do a cross that produces more than one phenotype, you will find the growth rate of each phenotype to be completly different.

The best I can explain the color is more of a peach, they all have this "sheen" to them that is almost impossible to capture on camera.

Pretty fish! From the photos it looks like the solid reds do not have any yellow in them. Do they show any yellow that you can see?

I can't say any of them qualify as solid red. More a solid peach. Interstingly enought a few of the solids are 14 bar fish as well. There is two that appears to want to be yellow, and I have been debating for some time now as to what to feed these fish in terms of color enhancing foods. I have opted to feed Al's Bio-pigment plus FDBW and concentrate on the orange of the SS's. This very well could turn the yellow fish orange.

One of the drawbacks of the compettion (albeit a small one) is I cannot seperate the batch into seperate groups (ie yellow and orange) and feed accordingly.

Which Snakeskin are you refering to? The orange striated, the solid orange, or the ghost SS? Hard to say how many of the other non-contest fish developed the pattern as I sold most of them at an early age. I do actually have two of each of those in the contest (striated, solid, ghost, and 9 bar).

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/b2-7-15-12_zps4ff42ab8.jpg

Birth date of these fish was 8/30 which makes them 10 1/2 months old. The brown SS is female, and I am 99% certain the PB SS is male (got a good look at the tubes).

I decided I like the potential of some of these fish so I went and did this:

Rick,
Did most of the fry end up looking like these or were these ones "the few gems" that you got from this cross?

Ric
k,

Well, not quite sure how to answer that, "gem" would be a personal preference type of question IMHO. I did this time focus on a few fish in my photo's that I did not previously pay much attention too in the past. The 14 bar brown based blue I would consider one of my favorites, this time I did not post a picture of it yet, as well as two of the 14 bar pb SS's.

In regards to these two fish, that solid orange is actually a pretty nice fish, something I hope to pair up with another like it and work on its shape in future generations. Achieving a solid orange fish in which the orange stays consistant into the gill head region is not that common. The other fish, a nine bar pigeon blood, is losing it's pattern now as it matures, and might end up looking or being a white butterfly with orange fins/highlights.

Rick -- I continue to return to this thread to look at this fish on a regular basis. Absolutely awesome! I never would've guessed it would've come from the mother and father. Simply awesome!!!!!

My winner of the competition!

took some pictures of this batch before I moved the fish around last night, but this batch's pictures didn't turn out so swell. Here is one of the finalist I picked for this batch which I allocated to a breeding tank with a new male:

I agree completely. Two of these would compliment my Fire Reds and Red Scribbles from Josie. If you plan on selling any I'll take 2 please.

Well, it took a few trys (3) but we got things right so far this go around. Had to strip down the tank and sterilize everything. Not sure if that is why this batch was succesfull attaching or not, but, the parents always did there part ( I was losing the fry right at free swimming). As to if the first few batches were just weak, or the tank cleaning did the trick I am not sure, but at any rate:
