I had 10 day old fry and 5 day old fry in the same tank with the pair. Today I came home and found only the 5 day old fry are left. Should I pull them from the parents?

It's not at all unusual for parents to eat older fry when a second batch comes along. It's believed they somehow perceive them as a threat to the new batch of fry. If the parents don't spawn again it's likely the new batch of fry will be fine.

Thanks CozyKeith, that's what I was thinking. But it's strange that they would eat healthy 10 day old fry.

Strange yes, unusual no. If they lay again you could try pulling the eggs and seeing if that breaks the cycle. Perhaps if they care for a batch longer they'll stop spawning. Your other option if they lay again is to pull the first fry and just feed them bbs. Neither is exactly what you'd want to have to do, but either might work for you. Best of luck.

How many 10 day old fry were there? They may have laid again because there weren't enough to bother with. Leave them be - let the pair figure it out. I tried pulling the eggs once and the pair still ate the fry. :( Then, I had to wait another week for another batch of eggs.

There was about 20 10 day old fry and about the same with the 5 day old. Thats what I was thinking that day want to keep the larger group. Now they have more eggs. I think if the eggs hatch with larger number of fry, they will eat the second batch.

That's likely, but not a bad thing in this case.

I think if the new eggs hatch and are free swimmers, I'm going to pull the older fry and get them on Golden pearls. What do you guy's think?

Thanks,

Freshly hatched bbs and golden pearls would be my suggestion, mostly the bbs.

I would put them in a tank with a divider and a lowered water level and pump them full of bbs. That way they almost bump into food.7572575726Grew those big enough to sell.

Bill I have a half filled 10G going with a small sponge filter and a heater for the fry. They have been eating BBS for 3 day now. I just have to transfer them to the 10G. I'm going to try some crushed Reef flacks. That worked on my fry that I raised a few years back. My adults that I had a few years back never ate the fry.

A pic of the pair with 5 day old fry. I raised the pair from 5 SS that I got from Kenny. I had another pair But gave them to my friend to cross them to some BD.75733

Yup, live is just more enticing to start off with.

So I should just do BBS for another week? I know they grow fast on BBS. It's just a pain in the *&^.

The second batch of fry are getting some size on them.
