quarter size discus in a 140 is a bad idea

Okay....i'm listening can you tell me WHY its a bad idea? Or just that its a bad idea?
Even if that's all I have in there? I'm missing something:confused:

They would grow out better I'm a smaller tank. Less room for food to get lost meaning more food is eaten causing better growth. They should also grow more uniformly. I would look at starting them in a 20 high then to a 40 then to your big tank. Just my thoughts.

Many people on here know a lot of information about discus and sometimes forget that others are still learning. Like Brandon said start them out in a 20 or 40. give them time to grow out before moving them over. Hey that'll give you time to find homes for your angels.
If it were me, at that size I would get at least 20. That gives you some wiggle room in case some die or they don't turn out the way you want them to. Feed them lots, change water often, and in 6 months or so move your 12 favorites to the 140, and you'll have an amazing display tank!

yep.. exactly as state in last two post.. PLUS>. a planted tank.. is not good for growing.. too much of the food will get lost in substrate..

go to petco.. they are having dollar per gallon sale.. get a 20g or a 40g..

i have 30: 1.5" fry in 20g tanks.. that i am growing out.. and they will stay there.. a while more.. much easier for them to find food and change water..
also all my tanks are BB..

Hi Gethenet, I have quarter size discus in a 300gallon tank before, I just section off a quarter of the tank, some what like a fry saver... as they grow i move the divider. Just enjoy discus as is.

Now for people like WARLOCK=(he is trying to win a contest) changing water 2x a day or more, feeding 4x a day or more, etc etc... he setup is very simple, but ugly to view, their goal is to max the growth of discus......there is pro and con to every setup.....

Ugly is a personal opinion.. Not a standard.. Kind of like ur wife or gf.. She may be ugly for me to view.. But not to u.. :)

Thanks for the intro Bill. I do have a dozen RT juvies left about the size you at least originally thought you were looking for. Here's a picture of the parents and a link to a thread showing them with one of their batches of little ones from earlier this year. http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?97513-Goings-on-in-the-FishCave

Jason K. is near Burlington, and 13discus is in Sheboygan also if Janesville isn't close enough for you. Both of those guys likely have fish as well. Another post and you should be able to PM I believe. If you want any of our numbers let me know.

I've also got 4 to 6 spare blue variety near adults and adults in a community tank I'd sell reasonably if you decide to go a different direction.

Thank you so much guys and gals. I have lots of decisions to make on what route I want to go. I think I might take some pics and video of the tank now, and see what you guys suggest. The tank is 28 inches deep....and its very difficult to work in, but im thinking of tearing out all the substrate out and redoing it. When I first set it up...last may....i was new to planted tanks, and was talked into a dirt tank....I assume thats not used much in Discus tanks. The tank is 48x24x28. will get some pics and video of it up soon

Thanks again

Mine was 48x24x31.After awhile I got tired of the height when cleaning, and was able to convince my wife to sell it and get a 180.
