Frank's F1 Growouts from Wild Parents - A Pleasant Surprise!

I had two of my Wilds acting friendly over the last week or so. In fact today, I added a breeding cone to the tank just in case. When I came back from cycling, I noticed that I had eggs. Unfortunately, they laid them on the heater which I turned off (I have two in the tank. One for backup).

I have had eggs before with other Domestics but they were always eaten. We will see in the morning if they are still there. The pair were fanning and overseeing the clutch which is more than I have had in the past. I am not expecting the eggs to survive on the first laying but am pretty pleased with the pair as they are showing parental instincts.

Now, I have to do a quick read on what to expect the next several days. The story behind this is interesting to me. I redid my canister filter for more biological filtration the past 4 weeks. I also did an “experiment” this week in not changing out the water since Saturday (normally 3-4x a week). I monitored the chemistry and things were fine. Now, I have the eggs. I wonder if there is any correlation? Also, how much of a WC do I do now that there may be fry? Should I be looking at putting the pair in another tank?

Off to do some reading but if anyone has any suggestions or point to a post on the website, let me know. Let me see if I can post a pic.

Wild Royal Blue Cuipeua was their description. I have had them since October of last year.

Resized the pictures. Woke up this morning and the eggs were eaten. By whom? Don't know. I never saw the pair eating them. Might be the other discus, or maybe the sole pleco, or the pair. Might do some rearranging and then await - or, I might move the supposed pair to a smaller tank. Any thoughts?

I didn't notice in the first post, but this experience puts the ole horizontal heater theory to rest, at least for your pair Frank, lol!

Frank, first congrats. Having wilds pair up and spawn is a big deal. Can you remove the other fish or add a foam divider? This thread might be of interest http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showth...ild-Tefe-Spawn.

I did not think about it but you are right on the horizontal heater! I have a cone in there now so perhaps they will like it better.

Sorry, the eggs were disposed. By whom, don’t know. I never saw them eat any of the eggs.
I left things as they were but one of the pair started pecking on the heater again. So, I removed the heater. SettleD in a cone. While I was at it, I removed the sole pleco (just in case this was the culprit). I might have disturbed the area too much but I am awaiting to see.

If I can confirm that they are a pair, I am thinking I will move them to my 40 gal. How often does a pair lay?

They should try again within 2 weeks. If you have the ability to put them in their own tank that would be ideal. Don't change any water habits as they seem to like what you have

1 week to the day, they are in the process of laying again. Still trying to determine if they are a genuine pair. The female has a fatter tube than the other so I am hopeful.

Hi Frank, I think you have the genders correct. My observations from breeding wilds is the female is generally smaller with a larger halo then the male. The striations are thinner on the female and the male generally has more striations then the female. Also if you look at the fish head on note the width between the eyes across the nose, the male will be thicker then the female.
