    Diet for discus fry

    Hi,

I have managed to successfully raise some discus fry and they are about 2 months old now.

I have been doing daily water changes and feed them freshly hatched Baby Brine Shrimp and crushed flakes about 4 to 5x daily.

I know alot of people here feed beef heart mix, but if I continue with BBS and commercial food, but keep up with water changes etc, can I still expect my discus to grow up nice and big? Or does Beefheart mix make that much difference?

    Thanks

I would suggest moving them towards Al's FDBWs. I see he does have the loose FDBWs but not the cubes.

      Thanks,
im from New Zealand so getting my hands on Al's FDBW will not be easy (im guessing it stands for Freeze Dried Black Worms?)

We do have some Australian FDBW available. I can give that a try?

That's exactly what Al sells, when the supply is available. He was the first North American distributor and actually helped develop the bio cubes. IMO, they are the best quality blackworms available! It's an excellent choice!

As far as bbs is concerned, I feed it until the fry are no longer interested, about 1". Around this time, I start supplementing with BH and blackworms and just about any other nutritional option.

Thanks, ill get my hands on some FDBW then.
currently they still going mad over the BBS so ill continue with that until they stop eating it.

My first batch seems to be quite good... only 2 die offs from the batch.

My second batch seems to be getting the 30 day syndrome. I removed them from the parents after 3 weeks and i see big die offs.

You really need to get discus fry onto solid food as soon as possible. BBS can sustain them, but does not have sufficient protein to put on growth. I personally prefer finely minced beef heart. You will be astounded by the growth rate on discus fry as soon as you can wean them from BBS.
At my age, everything is irritating.

By the time Discus fry are 6 weeks old they should be at least dime body size these would be for turquoise type of Discus, Pigeon Blood usually slightly larger and Blue Diamonds usually run a little smaller than dime. This is the standard growth rate I have from previous. I usually start feeding beef heart as early as possible by th time they are 6 weeks old they outgrown the fry on BBS.

Long story short BBS is not the answer. Back when I was breeding my fry would be on beef heart before they were a month old. What do you not like about beef heart?

Hi, nothing I dont like. Just cant manage to source any right now.
been to a few butchers and super markets around new zealand and cant find any.

                  Thanks for your help.
I just wanted to see if I use commercial food and BBS, would i still be able to get my discus to a large size (perhaps just at a slower rate?)

Ill keep trying to source some BH.

You may be able to find ultra lean ground beef instead of beef heart.

                        Just wanted to follow up.
does anyone know if lamb heart will work as an alternative?

It won't hurt them. Trim any fat off best you can. IIRC Jack Wattley made some from Turkey hearts.
