    Good breeding match?

    Hi all,
just wondering if you could help identify these two discus that have paired and wondered if anyone knows what the offspring would be like
Thank you in advance for your help

I generally don't recommend breeding pigeon to non-pigeon, and in this case, I believe the yellow fish comes from Snow White genitics while the red one is a PB. But in this case, the fish are of such excellent quality that I wouldn't be able to resist breeding them to each other. I have no idea what you might see from this cross. Maybe Al would have a clue.

I agree on the genetics. The white one is a brown based discus (I know it's confusing), and the red is a PB based Melon. I believe you'll probably get some pretty peppered fry out of this pairing.

You're correct, Brian. But the kids will be all over the place. He could well get some fry worth working with. If it were up to me, I'd go for it. That's the way they do it in Asia, isn't it? They make unusual crosses and keep the few worth working with. Of course, they have huge fish rooms and don't mind discarding a ton of culls to get those few good ones. In this case, I like the fish, so I'd go for it, hoping for the best and expecting the worst. The fish are young, and after all, it's just one single spawn.

Thank you for the input, everyone — it’s greatly appreciated. It appears that all of my PBs have paired with non-PBs. I previously paired a Blue Diamond with a PB Melon purely to see whether the pairing would be successful, and I’ve attached a few photos of the resulting offspring.

Jamie you have done well raising fry to decent size. Good eye to body ratio indicating good feeding regime & clean water.
If you wanted to raise some non peppered fry you could try “creating” a pair by separating a non PB male & female, rather than letting pairs form in a group setting. Discus are pretty frisky fish and often not too picky about who they do the biz with

Danny's right. I didn't know that you had a choice. But I'd still like to see you cross the Melon with the Snow White one day.

Hi Jamie, I did a similar cross before but to a PB checkerboard. The majority of the fry were of red-white genetics, no if any PBs. The appearance was not very good as colour wise, not red-whites but more like snow leopards with non-contrast snakeskin pattern on a greyish background. But in your case you may get red-whites or orange/whites.

Hi guys, (I'm new to the forum so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post it)

I've had Discus for a couple of months and I was caught off guard today by a bunch of eggs. I was not expecting that since they haven't been with me for a long time nor are they that big yet.

The pair that formed is a Blue and a Red Rose.
Anybody has any idea how the offspring will look like?
                    Anybody had a similar pair?

The blue is recessive, but then again, Red Rose kinda has some blue to it as well...

unfortunately may not produce a nice color in most of the offspring but you may get lucky with a few gems ...
