    Filtration - UVO light

Hi, I'm exploring getting an aquarium setup for Discus fish. I've been spending hours reading blogs, websites and watching YouTube videos. This forum is also helpful.

The shop I'm getting a quote from for an aquarium setup is suggesting I add a Fang UVO Aquarium Lamp

Hi, since you are doing research I am guessing you have read that discus require lots of clean water (daily or so) water changes. This will keep your water clean and IMO you do not need a UV light. Some folks here do use them. Personally I think the shop is just trying to make a little money on you. However perhaps those here with UV Lights will chime in!

I removed mine on the two large tanks, it was just a pain inside the tank the discus contently spawn on them and you got to replace the bulbs once or twice a year. I noticed no difference in water quality I do large water changes. I find it more useful on a QT tank than a display unless you have a heavily planted tank and in that case I would not have discus in it anyway. Supposedly UV light kills or neutralizes microorganisms like bacteria, parasites, viruses, and algae in an aquarium that's why I would use in a quarantine tank, but once the fish enter my eco system they should be clean (hopefully). This is my take others might not agree.

Thank you very much! I might remove the UV light if it's not vital. This is the setup I got a quote for;Click image for larger version Name:	aquarium setup.png Views:	0 Size:	72.0 KB ID:	2769789

I will share some updates as I go along. Thank you.

Ps. I also plan to remove item 7, the carbon cube.

I like them but have very limited objective evidence that they actually effect fish health outcomes much, at least with frequent water changes. My attitude is more hopeful than empiric. The bacterial counts in the water column should be lower with continuous UV exposure than periodic water changes. So what? Not sure. As an aside, I do not like them in the tank, but given that I use sumps, no need.
