Yes but after a while to get them eating well first, .5 of a degree at a time but leave in the air stones. Not sure what it was, high temp or low Oxygen? as the higher the temp the lower the Oxygen content but hopefully the extra air might do the trick once I start to increase the temp, we shall see. At least now I am not waiting for the next fish to die.

Famous last words.... lost 4 fish now the other 2 looking dark and skittish. All other fish fine.

Al, how long do you keep them in a salt bath?

Rams (and discus) can tolerate salt at 1 tablespoon per 1 gal for at least 10 days.

just be sure they are level tablespoons not heaping.

Thanks. too late all gone. This is the reason I gave up Discus all those years ago.

Steve, I hate when people lose fish ..its a real bummer to watch and I feel badly for you here. If you are sure your water parameters were good, its probably not your fault at all. Alot of the rams in LFS are mass produced overseas.. They crammed into Bags and shipped to wholesalers and then to pet shops. Its very likely the fish were sick when you got them and the stress of the move and acclimation did them in. I would try to find local breeders for your rams if you can...not importers or LFS

Thanks Al, it feels like I have killed these fish. It puts doubt in your mind that you are doing something wrong. Unfortunately I know no one who breeds these at home only fish stores.

                maybe ask here..

Hi all, I'm a few weeks of yet, but am looking to get a pair of German blue rams as title states. I've been doing some reading and am aware that a lot of the fish available at local fish stores are often somewhat diluted in colour/quality from generations of 'not so' selective breeding. Does...

Done a water test on the main tank that the Rams were in and it shows 100ppm of Chloride. Not sure if this is a factor but am now using Equilibrium to make the water change water. Maybe 30ppm of Nitrate in the water change water would of been less harmful than Chloride? Made up a 60l tank bare bottom with sponge to try again will keep you posted on my diary page.

                    A bit of an update....

Bought 2 more pairs, one pair in a bare bottom tank, sponge filter Ph 6.9 28c 100TDS 5 No3 no Chloride pristine water. W/C 2 days 20l + wipe down lost two today. One pair in planted tank Ph 7 28c 10 No3 120 TDS no Chloride, one died a week ago.
Can only think these fish are carrying something from the shop or breeder. Would love to find a local hobbyist breeding.

Don't think I am destined to keep rams.

Just had a very close look and think they had Hexmita (Hole in the Head) small pits in the forehead also had bulging eyes.

Would a Potassium Permanganate solution be okay to sterilize the tank and heater/filter/net Clean and dry out....

                    Guppies here I come!
