[HELP] Unknown Discus Sickness (Video attached)

    DISEASE QUESTIONNAIRE

    Problem

    1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

This Discus was very healthy and I had it with another one like this (died with similar symptoms to this) and they've been thriving for around 2 years or more. I added imported discus to my main tank, a week later this one stopped eating and started getting a sort of white fuzz on the body. I figured this was slime coat syndrome and decided to treat with Kannaplex. Since the fish wasn't eating, I had to use a pipette to dose it directly into the fish.

After a few days of treatment with Kannaplex, Metroplex and Prazipro in the water, the coat came right and the fish looked to be improving however, it still won't eat nor is it very active.

I'm suspecting the new ones brought in some bacterial infection but I have no idea if I'm on the right track with the treatment plan.

I'm thinking it's either a bacterial issue in which case I need to continue with Kannaplex dosed direct to the stomach but I already did this 5 times now so I'm thinking to give it a break. My other suspicion is that this could possibly be flukes? For this I'm doing
13mL prazipro dosed into a 200l tank. I will do a WC on day 7 and dose again (continue this 4 times)

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
Excess slime (treated for now), fins look fine, no flashing or darting, heavy breeding, stays in 1 place. No wounds or red marks on the body, no other signs of anything other than if we look at the gills it looks different I think.

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.
Kannaplex, Metroplex mixed with an Epson salt solution and dosed direct to stomach via pipette. The results were good. The slime coat stopped secreting excess mucus after this and the fish looks decent now but still skinny. I have stopped pipetting now as I don't want to overdo this. I did it for 5 days now.

Now I'm dosing prazipro in the water as I don't know what the problem could be. I already lost its partner which died showing the same symptoms as this one.

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
200l; 2 years; 2 (was a breeding pair given to me so they never used to fight at all) and I now added 4 juveniles around 6cm (much smaller than these 2 and they never interfere with these big ones)

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
Once or twice per week; 50%

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
Running for 3 years. JBL Manado sand about 5cm deep

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
Yes, 24-72hr. pH has been the same for years now. No variance in it.

    8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?
    Seachem Prime; to the tank

    9. Parameters and water source;
Municipal water; API test kit reports everything as clear. No other fish have signs of distress. Only my discus seems affected.

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp _28°c_

    - ph 6.5

    - ammonia reading 0

    - nitrite reading 0

    - nitrate reading 0

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water _100%___

    - RO water ____

    10. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
Yeah, imported discus (juveniles) likely the cause of the problem.

    11. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.

    12. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

    VIDEO:

    13. What do you believe is the problem? ( many times hobbyists asking for help have already formed some opinions or sought help elsewhere. Being upfront here will save time and effort on the part of members trying to help.)
I believe the import discus either brought in flukes or bacterial infection. These 2 discus were very active and healthy prior to adding these in and now 1 is dead and the other seems to be going downhill.

Re: [HELP] Unknown Discus Sickness (Video attached)

Can you post pics of whole tank and fish please?

The vid shows the fishes gills laboring.I would double check. your ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. Its really not likely that your nitrates are 0 ppm if you are doing water chamges of 50% once or twice a week..

When ever fish are sick or acting off, start by increasing your water changes and maintenance.

It sounds like you did introduce something with the new fish...it doesnt sound like you quarantined.

The pipeting of the medication.. That technique is risky. Did you get the pipet all the way into the stomach.. or just pipet the medication into the fishes mouth. ?

I will do so when I'm back home.

That could be true. I did a water change 2 days back so that is why when I tested it showed 0ppm No3 and No2. Ammonia is also 0 and has been this way for quite a while. The tank is planted so that is why I get away with less WC.

When ever fish are sick or acting off, start by increasing your water changes and maintenance.

It sounds like you did introduce something with the new fish...it doesnt sound like you quarantined.
That is correct. I didn't have space so just chucked them in. They seem 100% fine and very active but my older ones got sick.

The pipeting of the medication.. That technic is risky. Did you get the pipet all the way into the stomach.. or just pipet the medication into the fishes mouth. ?
Yes, I made sure I inserted the pipette deep enough so that nothing comes out from the gills.

Hi, apologies for not messaging sooner. The fish has recovered fully a week or 2 after this post. I kept with the pipette dosing method once per day until it was fine and this seems to have done the trick. I have also done a treatment of PraziPro in the tank as I think those Vietnamese discus brought in flukes.

My discus were super healthy prior to adding these imports in. Those imports were healthy from day 1 and never showed any signs of sickness even till today yet my Stendker's were all affected by something. I guess its possible they had some disease but were asymptomatic?

The main lesson here is to never skip the quarantine process even if the new fish look 100% fine.

Im glad everyone is healthy now .Odds are the new fish brought in a virus or had a pathogenic bacteria on them and were asymptomatic ... And the existing fish reacted to it and eventually got over it. It can happen anytime 2 groups of discus from different sources meet. A lengthy quarantine and use of a hero fish is your best chance of avoiding this in the future.

Hope you stick around the forum and share some pics.
