Treat as a shoal or individual in Rx tank?

20241112_151021.jpg 20241112_150402.jpg Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
Can you look at picture of the smaller juvenile in the pic w/ arrow pointing it out?
I'm growing this shoal out. Orig suspected potential hexamita & treated entire tank successfully ~ 5 mos ago.
This fish does not actively participate in feedings that I can detect.

    - Should I separate to a hospital tank by itself & treat w/ Rx or treat the entire shoal together?

    - I treated for Hexamita prev in June 24 & utilized Kanaplex after noticing white stringy scat & not eating of the same individual I blv. It worked before.

    - Should I switch to a diff Rx such as Metro?

    Or....

    - What about the use of magnesium sulfate as a laxative & then treat with heat up to 89F & NaCl?

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
Discoloration (lighter color), stunted size, hiding behavior during feeding.

N/A i don't see any white scat - only the not eating, runt sizing and color as seen in photo.

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

    Kanaplex,

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
90 gallon utilizing 3 XL sponge filters & Eheim 2262 (pimped out w/ biohome media).

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
    Daily: 90% from aged h20
Utilize seachem safe w/ h20 change as insurance policy

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
Tank has been running for 1.25 yrs & Discus in tank since April ’24.
    Bare bottom/No substrate

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
Yes it is aged for min 24 hrs (aeriated & heated).
    No ph swing as result.

    8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?
    Seachem safe
¼ tsp Safe at every h20 change

    9. Parameters and water source;
Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.
Source is municipal tap filtered thru effective coconut shell drinking h20 filter (Boogie Blue Plus).

    - temp 86F__

    - ph _7.8___

    - ammonia reading __0__

    - nitrite reading: 0 ppm

    - nitrate reading: 0.5 ppm

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water 100% filtered/aged/conditioned

    - RO water ____

    10. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
    N/A

    11. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.
    3 feedings per day:
    1. Frozen recipe home made
    2. Aquarem Freeze Dried blackworms
    3. Vibra Bites mixed w/Brine shrimp flakes.
    4. Once every 2 weeks I try do include a focus day on deshelled peas.

    12. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

The care you're providing is excellent so there's not much to improve upon. If only one discus isn't quite as active or up to par with the rest, then the first thing I would do would be to raise the temp to 93 and add regular salt at 4-5TBS per 10g for 10-14 days. This alone may turn things around. I don't think meds are necessary at this point since you don't see any obvious signs of sickness. If it does improve, you should notice results within a few days. If it continues to decline, a hospital tank ay be necessary, but at this time I would treat the community. Isolating a single discus can be stressful.

I am probably in the minority here, but sometimes it is better to sacrifice one fish for the good of the rest. I have done this more than once.

I think I would take that fish out and place in a hospital tank to observe and possibly treat. Its obviously not doing as well as its tank mates.. its smaller and its color is off. I think given the history you posted it may still be battling protozoans. Its fish like this that act as reservoirs for parasites .. they then shed those into the tank and eventually the other healthy fish get infected (again in this case). First step is to determine whats going on.. a hospital tank is the best place to do. Brians right it csn be stressful on the fish in question but its worth the risks, imo, there to get answers. I always want to protect the rest of the fish in these cases or things can spread .

Good point. And it doesn't appear to be overly sick at this time so isolation probably wouldn't be as stressful.

            Thanks to everyone!
What about trying the additional salt & temp to 93F first for 3 days & if no visible improvement that'll buy me time to set up my emergency 10 gal hospital?
As a follow up- once in the hospital tank what would you suggest I treat the individual fish with?

Remember, i treated once with Kanplex and I'm wondering if it's okay to utilize again?

            Thank you!

I don't think an infection is what you're dealing with. I would treat with metro along with the heat and salt. I'm a firm believer that metro is most effective with heat, and it's easier on the internal organs than many other antibiotics. If this is a case of hex, hex hates heat. 10-14 days with regular water changes. And remember, just like humans, 100% recovery may not be evident for a week or so after treatment, so resist the urge to hit it with another dose of meds. If you can get your hands on some freeze dried blackworms, that may help instigate appetite. Live is even better. I prefer a 20g hospital tank but a 10g will work as long as you keep up with water changes.

Thank you for the excellent advice. I knew this knowledge but failed to not pull the trigger until my fellow, experienced & trustworthy peers (unlike annoying people on FB that have PhD's in Google and provide advice as though they've been running a farm like Gabe Posada for the last 2 decades.
The fish in question has had it's color fully restored & actively eats suddenly& has become friendly!! I'm continuing the heat & increased NaCl for a full 10 day cycle. I wanted to close this one in a positive note as so many in this section end up with darker conclusions.
