Suspicious behavior on my Tiger Turq

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

Tail standing / dark stressed coloring

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

    none

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish. 40 gal. breeder tank, male Tiger Turq showing streesed signs with Dark coloring he is in with a female Golden PB / both approx. 1 1/2 years old

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often). 25 gal. weekely

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it? over a year

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing. Aged R/O well water, remineralized with Discus Trace / PH 6 - 6.5

    8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?

    9. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp _____84

    - ph _____ 6 - 6.5

    - ammonia reading ____0

    - nitrite reading ____0

    - nitrate reading ____5-10

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water ____

    - RO water ____100% aged from well water

    10. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently. no

    11. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can. Beef Heart mix soaked in Garlic Guard / Australian FDB once or twice a week / Hakari Frozen BW once or twice a week, feed a small amount twice a day, and skip feedings normally on the weekends as the tank is at my office and don't always come in on weekends unless coming to town, so feedings have been like this for over a year now with no ill signs of anything.

    12. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

    13. What do you believe is the problem? ( many times hobbyists asking for help have already formed some opinions or sought help elsewhere. Being upfront here will save time and effort on the part of members trying to help.) Was observing the fish this morning and noticed the Tiger Turq was extremely dark in color, tail standing on occasion which for over a year now has never shown any signs of anything, the pair has laid eggs numerous times and did notice they did so just the other day but they are gone as of today again.

      Marty,
I would check your tanks water parameters again your pH has crashed. If all is good there its possible the darkened look is from breeding. When Discus breed they darken up to attract fry and they build slime coat. You mentioned they just spawned the other day so that makes sense then if that is the cause. Be sure to check the tank well..sometimes a pair moves the fry.

Thanks AL, I thought the same as you at first, but don't see any young fry any where, and actually just tested the PH again, and it is showing 7.0 which is odd, it is normally lower, but I wouldn't think even it being that would have signs of what he is going through. I did raise the temp up 1 degree and was wondering if adding a salt solution may have an effect, I have never had to or really want to put anything in the tank for medications just yet, I was leaning towards just doing a early water change first to see if there is any change. Any suggestions.

Water changes are always a good Idea. one thing to note also is your nitrates may be creeping up. At about 50 % wc weekly over time they will climb.

Agree on the Nitrate, I have been doing a 80% WC once a month to keep them around 5 ish, but they never get any lower than that no matter what I try, I have a 55 gal. with sand substrate and 3 Discus and a handful of Cardinals and it tests exactly the same as the bare bottom breeder tank, so that has always stumped me with trying to get the Nitrate down past 5. If I were to do a salt treatment, is the salt ratio 1 TBS per 1 gal of water, and would it hurt anything to do that, or even cut the solution in 1/2 and treat with to see if there is any change, I'm leaving out of town in 11 days for a week and would like to make sure things are at least as good as they can be before hand.
