    flashing against air tubing

    Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
    just asking why discus occasionally rub against air tubing of sponge filter. all eat well and rush to see me when i come to tank. robust behavior. is this behavior as innocent as fish just scrathching an itch or what.?

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).


    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
    3 wk 10-3inch discus 55gallon tank

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).

    80% every other day
    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

    8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?

    - nitrate reading __20 ppm__

    What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    ph is 6.4 in aged water not 7.4 same as tank water and out of the tap water

      Sounds like something is irritating their gills. Could be flukes, could be something like ammonia. You really shouldn't be detecting any ammonia in a cycled tank That you are means there could be mini ammonia spikes going on.Fish actually excrete ammonia from their gills regularly so I am wondering if your tank is still cycling.
      I would suggest trying bumping up water changes and adding salt at 1 tablespoon per 10 gal. it can help soothe gills and may help here..

      If it doesn't ..try treating for gill flukes with praziquantel.. see if that makes a difference on the flashing.

        did a 80% water chg. total ammonia near zero. evidently i am overfeeding so cut down portions to 1/2 size and only 2x a day for the cycle to catch up to equilibrium. also clean up poop and any uneaten food 5 minutes after start of discus' meal starts. to prevent ammonia build up. fish behavior is robust. and alert.
