    Homemade foods

I saw Al mention that he made a batch of homemade food recently. Now that he is not selling FDBW any longer I need to make a batch of food.

I am in need of a good recipe. I was not real happy with the last batch I made so please share what you are doing.

    Lots of recipes here, Gary;
Hi all, I'm going to be putting together an article on food recipes. I'd be interested in adding your special beefheart, gel food, or whatever? recipe to the list if you could post it here. Hey Gary,
Its nothing very fancy. I wanted to make something simple that would let me transition from blackworms with my domestics and wilds to homemade foods

            5 pounds clean beefheart (fresh)
            2 pounds raw peeled shrimp(frozen/thawed)
            2 pounds scallops(frozen thawed)
2 ripe banana cut into small pieces
1/2 pound of my discus chow
            1 tablespoon garlic powder
            1 tablespoon paprika.

Mix and grind to ground hamburger consistency..freeze in freezer bags at about 1/2 inch thick. Its basically what I have done in the past but the scallops might be subbed with salmon or squid or clams depending on whats on sale. i rarely make it the exact same way as the last batch.

It took a few days for them to be happy with it but everyone eats it now with no complaints and many are hitting it as hard as fdbw. its not as clean as blackworms but my water quality has been good so Im happy. Im not thrilled paying $5 lb for beefheart but thats the price out here.

How ripe are the bananas? Yellow and eating ripe or brownish and banana bread ripe?
              Any vitamins?

Yellow and eating ripe... no vitamins...given the ingredients I think.it would be overkill. I was tempted to add calcium .... sometimes I do...not this batch.

Thanks. I really need to consider making some since we can't get FDBW.

Sorry Gary. Really wish I could provide them for you and everyone else still. Just not possible anymore.

Best homemade mixes keep it simple.. add the kitchen sink and it usually fouls the water bad...okay for those doing huge wcs daily but can really do a huge amount of harm for hobbyists that are not doing massice wcs.

I'm new to discus but made a recipe based off what a local breeder near me makes and I'm amazed that they prefer this over bloodworms now.
                      750 grams beef heart
                      2 tablespoons spirulana powder.
                      A teaspoon of mixed garlic
                      Handful of fresh baby spinach.
I just chop and run it through the food processor. Also I process the baby spinach on its own and mix it through at the end. For my 8 discus this is like a 6 month supply of food.

Ryan, If that breeder was where you got the discus it makes sense as they were probably raised on it or similar.
