    Price of wild discus

As I have been looking at getting some more wild discus I remembered when I had gone to Peru to collect my own fish. I found myself at a fish exporter's warehouse in Iquitos. There were tanks of full sized discus that I presume were Peruvian greens. They sold some to me for 25 cents each. Those were the days.

If I were ever to take the plunge, this would be my strategy:

          1. sign up for an expedition,
          2. fly into Manaus,
          3. go to the wholesaler's warehouse to pick out my fish,
          4. check into the Holiday Inn,
          5. enjoy a hot shower,
          6. fresh fruit and Guatemalan coffee for breakfast,
          7. return to airport, and
          8. make up stories about sleeping in one un-airconditioned room for 6+ nights with 11 unbathed men of a certain body shape...
At my age, everything is irritating.

its funny you were able to buy them for that.. Mid 90s I used to visit all the CT petshops and searched for wild Discus... they were expensive even then here.. I remember paying anywherr from $60-85 for what we call common wilds... heck of a Markup I guess at the CT wholesalers.

Willie, I thought you were more of a Asian Discus Tour buyer person, just like what we had in the early 90's, sleep in a five star hotel.

I paid $10 for an adult wild green Discus at a local pet store in San Francisco back in around 1965. My last visit to a wholesaler
back in 2020 they were selling wild greens for around $60 to $70, this is in the San Francisco Bay Area. Talked to an broker a few years back he said that they were buying wilds for $7 in Florida, but he didn't mention when.

For100 you asked for some photos. Since this was my first collecting trip I did not take many pictures of habitat like I did in later trips. These are from an old point and shot camera so excuse the quality.Click image for larger version

Great views!!! I am sure it was a great experience. My parents in law live in Bogota, Colombia. I might have the opportunity to go to one expedition but to collect Altums near rio negro. If it happens, it will be when kiddos are in college. So, we are talking about at least 4 years in the future.

Out of curiosity, How did you get in contact with the organizer? It was someone you knew?
