    Brown Cameta and Heckel Cross

I stumbled upon a fish store that stock wild discus. It’s already slim pickings but it is what it is. They stock 5-6” wild Cameta browns below for $180 and smaller heckel cross with something else for $120z

Does Cameta develop more color or is it mostly solid brown/red? I think it looks ok. Frankly, I think my Batata x jacareppa cross looks better. The heckel cross definitely looks like a heckel with the distinctive middle bar.

I think my iPhone 11 is enhancing the photos except the last two because they’re mine and they really look that nice

    Photo 4 and 5 - Batata x Jacarepa cross

Hi, I am just going to give you my personal opinion. On the heckels cross I think those are just wild blues with a strong center bar. On the heckel crosses I have seem the center bar looks like a Heckel centerbar. Here's an example.

The Heckel center bar looks wider and appears that way on the Heckel crosses I have seen.

I think the Cameta should show more red after they settle. If your water is soft this could happen faster. Are the Batata x Jacarepa cross wild fish? Or are they from Discus X? If they are wild there are some nice looking fish in the last two pics.

Thanks Pat. I wonder how those wild blues with a stronger center bar will look like in the future.

Will the Cameta develop more color/striations? My straight RO water is 6.5 pH. I prefer wilds of a different color since the 5 that I have will likely end up being blue with red base.

The last two are not from discus X. I bought them from Texas aqua as Batata x Jacarepa. They are definitely looking good. Great eaters too

In my experience wilds always improve with time. If the Cameta are young they might develop more striations as they mature. Are the Batata x Jacarepa actually wild fish. Sounds like a domestic cross.

Thanks Pat.i am on the fence on getting some but at this point, probably won’t.

At this point, who know if it is a wild cross of some sort. Sellers sell it depending on what their suppliers tell them what it is.

I do know the Batata x Jacarepa cross come from DiscusX via Discus Hans. Hans may still sell to fish stores also. I think the Batata x Jacarepa is considered a wild cross.

Thanks again dear sir. Just for my own information, wild cross is the result of a wild and domestic getting it on right?

Generally true but what if you had a two wilds, say a wild green and a wild blue pair up. That too is a wild cross? Right!

I decided to try discus again after a 5 year layoff due to health reasons. My last fish came from snookin21 but I don't think he's around anymore. I wanted some tank breed discus that looked like wilds so I tried the Red Batata x Jacarecappa cross discus sold by Discus Hans. I bought 5 of them, 3" size; what he sent was more like 4" fish. I have to admit they are truly gorgeous fish, acclimated to my 40 gal. breeder tank in just 2-3 days. Discus Hans is a first-class dealer and I'm glad I ordered from him.
