    Medications and treatments question?

    Hi all,
Not sure if I will get any good feedback on this one as sometimes people are tight lipped about this but I am curious. In the last year what medications have you used on your Discus and why? This can include prophylactic medications like Dewormers ( praziquantel, levamisole, flubendazole, as well as antibiotics(metronidazole, kanamycin, nitrofurozone??), Oxidizers ( potassium Permanganate, Formalin, chloramine T, Hydrogen peroxide ???), dyes( methylene Blue, acriflavin, malachite green????) , salt etc... how about shot gun medications like Seachems Paraguard orPolyGuard , API general cure, api fin and body, Fritz expel P, etc How about poisons like Copper?

Do you feel what you used did what it was supposed to do?

Right now, I'm treating a tank that I neglected while putting my roof on this summer. I see some gill inflammation and several turned dark. I first added about 6 TBS salt per 10g and one of my big boys didn't take it well. He turned black and laid down for a coupe of days. After adding the salt, one of his eyes clouded and bugged out so I'm thinking an internal infection was in the making. I'm currently treating with salt, kanamycin (for internal) and nitrofurazone (gills). All the fish are looking better as of day 4 and the one in question has regained his color and the eye is much better but still a cause for concern. I plan on treating another 6 days.

In another week or two, I'm thinking about running a course of chloramine t if the gill inflammation is still looking bad.

None of the fish in this tank ever lost their appetite and are eating aggressively, other than the one that laid down for a couple of days, but even he's back to normal activity. So far, it's working about as expected...

I used metro because some fish went off food. I thought it worked, but maybe not on all of them because I have another eating little and hiding sometimes. It's because my metro was past date, I'm sure. I'll be ordering some more on Monday.

I have used both praziquantel and levamisole as part of your QT process Al. Also used kanamycin on one of the blue snakeskins as it had a bump on it's tail. I am having a bit of white poop with the snakeskins but just watching for now.

Thats more than I thought I would get for replies, but I am sure its only a small percent of whats been used by hobbyists here this past year. I know theres a stigma attached to treating fish. Sometimes its justified... but sometime its necessary. Personally I have used the dewormers praziquantel and levamisole. I have used the protozoan medication Metronidazole. Also used salt, and formalin. Except for the Metro these are part of my quarantine procedure when ever I get new fish in. I don't usually need metro but i did get a batch of Discus in that did require it. I have not needed Antibiotics here in years.

No antibiotics have been needed here either. I know that metro is considered an antibiotic, but I think of it more as an antiparasitic.

Al, do you use formalin as part of your QT process?

Medications right off the top of my head used were Cloud, kanamycin, formalin 37%, fluke tab, nitrofurzone, praziquanntel, plain salt, triple Sudafed and copper. Some of these medications are not on the market anymore. These were medications when I brought fish into my operation, they could be from another hobbyist or imported . I was lucky because Herman Chan would sell me medication right out of a jar and tell me how to use it. Well before Covid I had too many fish so I didn't bring any fish into my operation for a few years,I only bred my own stock artificially and the only medication used was methylene blue and acriflavin for hatching the eggs.

Cliff I remember Clout and Fluke tabs very well. They were great medications when used correctly. I know what you mean about not bringing anything in for years.I did the same and its amazing how I never had any issues at that point.

Are you still breeding or keeping Discus Cliff?

Al, I retired 11 years ago thinking all the free time for fish keeping but that never happen. When Covid hit four years ago I'm back in
the office Monday thru Friday during the days and caregiver after work and along with my health issues it leaves me no private time.
So with all this going on currently I don't have any fish just a bunch of empty tanks.

Once every 3 months, I use Flagyl (metronidazole) mixed in the food during one week as prevention for internal parasites.

Carlos, can I ask why? Where would they be getting them? If you treat them once in an appropriate dose and duration it really should be enough, Just be sure to Quarantine all new fish. Using any antibiotic (like metro regular creates resistant strains. Its not something you really want in your tanks.

I’m not adding new fishes to the tank so definitely that’s not a potential source of parasites.

I do this preventive treatment because I feed the discus with beef heart recipe and using raw ingredients in the recipe might be a risk in what regards internal parasites, no?

I remember this kind of treatment was recommended by many people including breeders by the 1st time I had discus to avoid internal parasites issues.
