    beginner questions

i have five nice discus from Wattley in a 75 gallon. FX4 and Tidal 110 filters. I do NOT feed bloodworms for fear of disease. I feed freeze dried black worms, frozen mess and brine shrimp. pellets and flakes.

question: My local Petco has frozen beef heart.

    1. will that cause disease in discus?

    2. is that good for them. not exactly what the discus see in their environment

    best,

    bob
    and thanks

I use my own BH mix so I don't think store bought BH would be harmful unless it's been thawed and gone bad, but you should be able to smell that.

But I wouldn't feed it exclusively.

Hi Bob, I have been using Hikari brand frozen bloodworms for my discus fish for many years. They are perfectly safe to feed to your fish. You just need to keep up with your water changes and they will be healthy and happy. I run my heat at 86° Fahrenheit. I have 5 × 8" inch German turquoise and two breeding pair in different tanks. I grew them out from when they were 3 inches. They are thick and healthy.

            Hi Bob,

I once bought frozen beefheart cubes in a blister pack. It is safe but it "dissolved" quite a bit, messing up the water. Give it a try. Maybe the one your are looking at will work better. FDBW and beefheart are high in protein, which is great. Bloodworms are less. I use those more as a snack.

Discus Hans USA sells 2 Lbs. slabs of ready made beefheart that he makes himself. I use to buy it from him when he was located in Maryland.
