    Diatom filters

Back in the day we had a System One diatom filter. It hung on the side of a tank and used a small cartridge and a table spoon or two of diatoms. It would clear up a tank in a short time. It was much smaller than a Vortex filter and much more convenient. Are there any comparable diatom filters available today?

It would be nice to use one after wiping the inside of a tank to clear it up.

Not diatom but similar is the marineland magnum filters. Instead of diatoms they have a weaved filter that polishes the water. They work great. Think they put the diatoms filters out.

I have one laying around in my workshop that I don't ever use but they were more effective than the Marineland. What kill it was the amount of work to clean and expensive filter material (not the powder) and you can really only use it in a single tank (cross contamination). I also have a marineland that I do't use either.

I have A Vortex De laying around and don't use it. I have bought a second hand Hayward pool DE with pump for $50.
This is the model I have and its in good working condition. I'm going to use it in my fish room, it will be connected between my sump and the return water line and tanks. This thing will filter a swimming pool, I think the pump is bigger then I need so I considering changing out the pump for a JEBAO.

Looks like I will have to build my own.

I used DE with my magnums pleated filter, but as noted the pleated filter does a fine job on its own. A soaking in bleach water would clean up the pleated filters good as new.

I had a Magnum back in the day. Never used DE in it. I liked the System One much better. Need to order some parts for the home built DE filter.
