Leave the tanks lights off and turn off the overhead lights? If light is coming from a window wait until night time.

Hi Richard, sounds like a great way to extent the life of your wooden stands.

I am not sure how I missed this in my previous fish rooms but I noticed that when spilling the smallest amount of water on the concrete floor the 2 x 4's appear be soaking it up. Yesterday I had some 1/4 inch stainless steel cut out in 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" pieces and I did put one piece under each leg of the tank stands. Hopefully this will keep them dry going forward.

I just read this from start to finish and it brought back memories of when we build Jack's fish room at DiscusKC. Fun times!! Yours is very nice and very clean!!

Got my first shipment in yesterday evening!
4 groups of nine fish, sizes between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 inch, from golden state discus.
Fish came packaged very well and all are in excellent condition.

One thing to consider is the temperature of the room. I plan on keeping the room at around 84 - 86 F once I get my first Discus which I suspect to be on the warm side for guppies.

The 10 gallon tanks were "left over" from my fancy guppy days, they may not be of any use for discus so I may look for something else for those.

I would be interested in purchasing discuss from some of the breeders here on the forum, I am keeping an eye on the "for sale section".
Fancy guppies would be an awesome idea, and that's kind of where my mind first went with all those 10s. I think either nano fish or a bunch of varieties of shrimps would look pretty awesome as well!

    Thank you Liz!

I am not planning on importing or making this a business of any kind.
It is a hobby first and if some fish would be available for sale down the road it would just be a bonus.

I hope you are doing ok!

Obviously discus, so I'd probably get some various solid and patterned groups/pairs going. I keep a really good eye on new stock from our sponsors to note ones I would like. Besides discus, I'd probably go with some varieties of cories, various plecos, and various dwarf cichlids.

Out of curiosity, do you have any concern about the sheer strength of the fasteners you used for the rack system(s)? Only asking because I noticed that your horizontal 2xs don't have any framing carrying the load all the way to the ground.

    Jake,

I looked up sheer strength of the fasteners and found that i am at about 25% of the max load ( I hope I got the math right ) . I also used wood glue just to make sure.
After I build the racks I did want to move one level up because the new 55's were a few inches taller than the one I had. I gave up on that because the wood glued joints were stronger that the wood itself.

I contemplated adding some 2 x 4's on the inside of the existing "legs" to support the horizontal 2x4's but didnt really feel the need to do so. Maybe I should....
