    Multi-tasking Meltdown ..Inkbird failed

Multi-tasking is a way of life here with all my tanks. Had one of those multi-tasking failures while doing water changes this am. Had a hose set to drain 30%. It apparantly slipped the clamp and drained the whole tank while I was in the other room. I found out because I could smell melting plastic. The exposed heater melted the suction brackets.

No real damage done and the heater did not crack but I was really surprised ..whenever my inkbirds probe is exposed they beep. No beeps this time. Probe was high and dry.

technology is great... just dont rely on it too much I guess.

The Inkbird does not have a out of water alarm just a high temp upper limit and low temp lower limit. Mine goes off with the lower temp if is out of water and reads the room temperature but with this heat your room temperature min was within range so it did not beep.
How hot is that room and what is your lower limit alarm temperature set at?

Chuck I didnt say that it had an out of water alarm.. just that it always goes off when out of water.I run my tanks hot. This tank in particular is a 90 F wild Ram Tank.
My fish room is running 78F .

As a test I have pulled 4 probes and all beep when out of water here.
Thinking about it .. What may have happened is heater heated the air enough in the tank to trick the probe.. the heater is a very beefy orolushy and it was smoking hot. If thats the case then it wasnt really a failure of the inkbird but I have no way to know that really.

Feel like burning through another heater for science? What I believe is happening is as you've stated. The air around the heater was warmed enough to not set off the inkbird's low temp alarm.

lol.. what I plan on doing is letting the tank come to temp and stabilize...I had to use my water storage and tap to fill the tank... so its currently at 83 F. I will then take the probe out and see what happens at room temp... depending on that I may put the probe into a glass jar and manipulate the temp with ice water and see at what point it beeps.

I usually have my lower alarm at 78 F and my basement is at less than 78 F all the time so mine always go off. My probes are far away enough so my heater wouldn't affect it. I have the inkbird as a safety for my 600 watt Hyger so it's continuously on.

I never paid for the extra special Inkbirds with alarms. But I put all my probes down on the bottom of the tank for just this reason. Still doesn't help if the heater is out of water trying to heat but not transferring to the water.

If it's any consolation, I've melted plenty of suction brackets with those orolushy heaters from Amazon and they just keep on ticking. Meanwhile, lightly overheat some other heater and it shatters into a million pieces. Best dang money in the heater world in my opinion. And they're BUILT. Glass (quartz?) seems like it is twice as thick as other heaters too.

I agree Jacob, I tried them because you mentioned them in the past and I am really impressed!

I love my Inkbirds, however they are famous for their crappy probe suction cups. I had one that came off the glass and rose to the top and it didn't shut the heater off while I was cleaning a tank. Luckily, the tank didn't have fish in it and I caught it in time.

I noticed that too... I have a bunch of ink birds and their suction cups really are terrible!
