Hello. My name is Dan. My grandfather started keeping Discus in the 1950's and when I was 12 (about 1970) he gave me one of his homemade tanks. It was a 90 gallon tank with a welded frame and the whole back wall was rocks that he had collected and mortared in place. I still have this tank but it needs some work to re-set some of the rocks and to sand the rust out.
It wasn't long before I had 8 tanks bubbling away in my bedroom. My Dad drilled a hole through the wall and connected an airline to the shop compressor with an air filter, and my Mom, being a nurse, brought home a bunch of IV tubing with IV valves & junctions and etc. for airlines.
Then there was college, jobs, kids for 20 years, and a few fish tanks along the way but nothing demanding. Some Africans. Tried my hand at breeding Rams.
Recently I have been wanting to set up an old 75g tank for keeping some Discus again. The difference now is all these new strains; a tank full of modern Discus looks a little like a collection of party balloons or lollipops. I'm still trying to learn the new strains and I especially like the golds and yellows, but wild ones still have for me that subtle Discus beauty I learned to appreciate as a kid.
I'm currently doing the plumbing for a water changing method that will be quick & easy. Not automatic, just not the sloshing of water and hoses all over the house.
Land surveying is my livelihood, with spare time divided between woodworking, irrigation, cows and assorted other chores.
When i first joined on SD i kept looking for pictures of as many strains as i possibly could and i was somewhat successful but i know there are so many more strains and pics out there that i have never seen. So, it brings me to this thread. My goal is this, i want to post pictures of all strains on this specific thread for
