Re: Tell us about yourselves....Please
Hi Simply Discus members,
My name is Peter, I am from northern New Jersey, born and raised in Poland, came to USA in late 80s. Married, 2 kids also have German Sheppard and a whole lot of fish
I started with tropical fish keeping about 25 years ago, went through all the mistakes that any novice makes. My biggest thing was always breeding angels, at one point I had well over 3k fish around quarter size that end up being sold to local pet stores (mostly store credit). That little endeavor allowed me to get more and more fish tanks, filter etc…I am still breeding them and do sell them to local wholesaler.
In late 90s I setup my first discus tank - 120gal, got 12 2.5’’ fish from good breeder, few BD, couple PB, BT, despite many issues, wrong water parameters, parasites etc the discus grew to about 6 – 6.5 ‘’ and started spawning, unfortunately where I lived at the time, the water was very hard (read - concussion after every shower
) no eggs would hatch so I got myself 50gpd R/O unit and with frequent water changes I got few of the clutches to hatch and even got few of the babies to about 3’’, then I got hit with some disease/parasite that in less than a month wiped out every single discus. No water changes or medication helped.
I made a promise to myself never ever again keep those beautiful but very difficult fish… well I lied
Recently I bought 7 brilliant blue, 3 blue diamonds from Hans, they are in BB 55 gal, 50-80% water change a day, beefheart, Hans flaks 4-5 times a day.
My plan is to keep them in that setup for few months. In meantime I am setting up 155gal BB aquarium, I will have just a few pieces of driftwood, no substrate, and maybe few tetras, corys in it.
I have been lurker on this forum for few months, joined as a member in April.
I want to thank all the members for sharing their knowledge, experience with the rest of us. I am sure many mistakes are being avoided just by reading and following advise by this forum.

Hopefully I will be getting some discus soon. Maybe a couple red melons ! I'm not sure yet. I am still doing some research to decide if discus may be a option. I have a cycled tank all ready for them.Comment

S,1zzaorlkoipzpp)jnw'Hi I'm Pamela and I live in Birmingham, AL. I started posting on Simply several years ago as PamelaJ (if I remember correctly). I have no children and currently live in a 2 bedroom apartment.
I got the discus bug about 20 years ago shortly after I graduated from high school. Unfortunately, my lifestyle at that time was not conducive to keeping healthy discus, and I killed the poor things.
I moved to Denmark in 2003 and shortly thereafter set up a 800L BB tank with several Stendker discus. I raised them from juvies and they were a sight to behold. I wish I still had the pics. Anyway, I sold them after growing them out along with all my tanks
as the price of water in Denmark was outrageous, and I just couldn't afford to keep giving them the water changes they deserved.
I moved back to the States from Denmark in April 2011.
My latest setup started about a year ago. I have 6 discus in a 55 gal tank (2 PB reds, 1 PB yellow (my runt), a breeding pair that have recently identified as ghost discus, and a blue turquoise. I'm currently learning the hobby all over again. I've made all the newbie mistakes I'd learn not to make when I was keeping discus several years ago, but have managed to get by so far with only one casualty. I had one that wasted away due to being on the bottom of the pecking order and didn't get him into a hospital tank before it was too late. I had a major flukes outbreak that almost killed the whole lot of my fish a few months ago due to plopping a LFS discus in with my healthy ones, but thanks to advice here, I got some Malachite Green and got them back in good health.
I have a 55 gal tank that I grew out my juvies in (I know, bad, bad bad!) with gravel substrate (worse!) and plants. I also have a 55 gal BB breeding/growout tank that I acquired the other day as my two ghost discus were spawning. After reading here, I'm planning on making some changes to my planted setup and increasing my water changes as I'd forgotten just how important clean water is to discus.
And that's about it.
I just want to say thanks so much for this forum and for the helpful members who have given me advice so far. I look forward to getting to know more of you, and when I get that 100+ gallon aquarium I keep dreaming about, I'm sure I'll be hitting some of you up to sell me some fish.

Hi!
I'm Augusto from Mexico City and I've manteined discus for a shot time; a year ago I think.
Since I was child I started with little aquariums with non-complex species like guppys, mollys and oscards, actually I had a Oscar for aorund 8 years.
Around 4 years ago I bought a little group of discus (5 discus) but my grandma was in the hospital I the poor quality of water killed all of them.
A year ago I was looking for new discus and I bougth five, I learned from bad habbits, and coff.. coff.. yeah, I loosed some discus. Currently I think I have a nice aquarium look like black river biotope with 5 discus (my best discus is showed in my avatar) and I have a couple in medium size tank.
So... I'll be very active in the forum and.. I hope share some of my experience a learn a lot.Comment

Re: Tell us about yourselves....Please
Hello all! I have been keeping a community 125 gal. for six years with clown and angelica loaches, BN Longfin and Albino Plecos (that won't stop breeding!), galaxy and frog pleco, cardinal tetras, one kissing gourami, one marble veil angelfish, hatchets and cory cats. I also have a 54 gal with a Leopard Perch and white crayfish. I figured I was seasoned enough to try the beautiful Discus and have started just a few months ago by purchasing some from Kenny. I am very thankful that Simply Discus members are here to help me in my endeavors. I live in Florida and have a houseful of pets, two dogs, two cats, two birds, and the fish. I also tend to my butterfly garden. I look forward to learn from everyone. Oh yeah and thanks Al for those awesome black worms all my fish love them! Thanks to all. LuanneComment
