    New journey; freshwater stingrays…

Over the 40 yrs or so in this great hobby I have kept many many species of fishes. I have always wanted to keep rays but never been in a position to do so due to tank requirements, cost and the demands of my busy life.

3 weeks ago I came across an ad on Craigslist with a guy selling a trio of designer hybrid rays. A huge investment, but the trio was priced at what these rays cost as 5” juveniles and are 3 yrs old, just reaching breeding age/size. After many weeks of trying to work it out financially, my wife and I got the funds together, and this past weekend I spent 13 hours Sat tearing down my 500gal completely to prepare it for the rays. Sunday after church I drove from Cincinnati to Chicago to pick them up.

I now am the nervous, but proud owner of a 13” black diamond hybrid male (swirly gold markings in vid), 15” black diamond hybrid female (gold dots), and a 16” “super” hybrid female. Super hybrids have the genetics of a minimum of 3 strains crossed together.

As you will see in the video below, the super hybrid female has bite marks on her disc that are as a result of breeding attempts by the male. I have to keep a close eye on them in case the male inflicts too much damage in the pursuit of love. Lol!

They like 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and can tolerate nitrates in the 40-80 range, though when I tested the water they were in in the previous owners indoor pond, the nitrates were 160!! They were still very active, but their activity level increased quite dramatically as I slowly acclimated them from ph 6.6 to my ph of 8.4, into water with nitrates of 20-40. Unfortunately, my tap water is 20-40 right put of the tap. This also means I won't be growing out discus again anytime soon

They are feeding on massivore 8mm pellets, and will get night crawlers & raw shrimp supplemented in their diet.

Female rays once sexually mature (2.5*3 yrs of age) can have 1-8 pups, depending on the size of the female, every 4 months or so. I would be so stoked for this trio produce the goods!

I’ll keep this journal thread updated with my experiences, hopefully including the birth of baby rays!

Please excuse the cloudy water. These guys stir up the new washed and introduced sand so I imagine it will take several days to fully clear up.

Amazing Daniel. If they breed what is the provision to raise them?

Thanks Frank, I am very excited about this opportunity!
There's a commercial breeder called "stingray biologist" who has a ton of content on youtube. Rays are approx 4" disc diameter at birth. He floats smaller plastic containers in his breeding tanks for the new borns until he is able to get them onto solid food, and then he transfers them to grow out tanks. Fortunately, because of the size of live born baby rays, once they are eating & strong they are ready for sale, typically within a month of birth.
I have food grade totes that I used in my aquaponics set-up that I will use as grow out tanks for any baby's I am able to produce.

Thank you Al!! I know right, belly sliders, LOL. I was thinking I would keep discus with them, until I discovered my nitrate levels out are 20-40 of the tap, and the fact that rays create A LOT of waste. I do plan a bi-weekly 30-50% water change, but I imagine my nitrates will remain 40-80 consistently so, unfortunately, it just wouldn't be a suitable environment for discus.

Great looking rays! Good luck with them! I thought they needed cleaner water than discus? 300g tank is a must too! Heard they eat discus? Again good luck! Big investment! I’ve got a guy buy me that sells them. They are expensive!

Thanks Tom. There’s a lot of variation in the info out there. Rays are entirely intolerant of ammonia & nitrite, and ideally very low nitrates, especially with wilds, tank raised are seemingly more tolerant of wider nitrate parameters and I was actually shocked to discover the test I did in the previous owners water reveals nitrates of 160! The rays were still active and feeding well. With my tap water nitrate lvl 20-40 my goal with biweekly water changes is 40-80.
My tank is 500 gallons, 10’x3’x2.5’ Yes, expensive, but I could pass up the opportunity to buy breeding age adults for the cost of 5” pups. Hopefully it pays off!
Is the guy by you Rodrigo from Predatory Fins? I think their shop is in NY??

Wow Danny, you did dive in my friend and they are gorgeous. I'm a fan of rays but do not see myself having them. Without the nitrate issue I have read that rays and discus are not a good mix. Hopefully in time these guys will pay for themselves.

No it’s not predatory fins (pf) it’s a place called country critters. No clue as to what pf is doing. They’re close to me but I think they’re an online type shop. I hear nothing about them but how great they are and blah blah blah .

lol it’s more of a small zoo than pet store . I take the grand kids and they have a blast. As you leave they got a wall of stuffed dog toys like any gift shop . So my grand kids are always walking around or sleeping with dog toys .

Oh Danny, you made my heart to thumpidy thump. I've never admitted this, but Rays, not Discus are my first love. It's something about the way they move. It's so sensual. I want to see pics of your progress. I want you to have babies.

I knew a fish guy whose name I can't remember who left Discus for Rays. He had cameras set up so he could watch the fish at work. This is way before that sort of thing was common.
