Back after being out of the hobby.....1 75 Gal , 40 Gal Sump

    Hi all,

After a long break from keeping Discus because of family matters (AKA kids), I'm back on the forum and taking it slow this time. Before I had several tanks running, water changes at 4AM, Beefheart making weekends etc. Now I'm starting with 1 75 Gal with a 40 Gal sump. I decided that I would do it right this time and not rush things and make a journal of getting back into the hobby. ATM, the tank and sump sits in my basement and when I get time from work and daddy duties I try to get things ready for my first new batch.

Couple initial thoughts coming back after being away for so long....Lots of suppliers are out of the game.....Vern, Upper Canada Discus, local breeders?? Not many ppl are into fish....Hmmm

Second hand tanks are expensive LOL, dollar a gal is not even a thing anymore....

Anyhoot, I'm going to post my tank journey as it comes and hopefully find some local breeders to help me with stock. I'm looking for wilds this time, still into the wattley green tefe or semi red tefe greens, but if you have supply in and around Ontario I'll take a look

    BTW, happy to be back

That's wild. The hobby is very popular locally and I had absolutely ZERO interest in any of my tanks at less than $1/gallon. I had a 75 with a $200 light, filters, nice stand, etc for $50 and NO bites. I ended up just giving everything away. I'm recently out of the hobby, so opposite ends of the spectrum. Welcome back!

Where do you live? I have high quality breeding stock for sale as well as used tanks for $1.00 a gallon. Everything is for pick up, though. I live in Mississippi.

Welcome back to the hobby! I'm looking forward to following your progress for your setup.

Liz - looks like dragon1974 is in the Ontario, Canada area, so might be quite the drive to pick up some of your great stock. I'm not aware of any Canadian suppliers - wish I could help more.

Thanks for that, Jake. I wish that there was a market for quality Discus in my neck of the woods. And a drive to southeast MS is a long drive for most.

Thanks my discus family....Honestly I would pay for shipping to the border in Buffalo if it's coming from anyone here on the forum We have a couple decent suppliers here but I would assume age got to them as they were already up in age. When I had my tanks I had stock from Vern Archer and some from Stendker. @liz if you're willing to ship send me a pm and we can talk further.

Dragon, I'm old and broken myself. I just can't handle all that's involved in shipping anymore.

Looks like I might be travelling to Myrtle Beach at the end of August with the family. Do we have anyone selling wilds in that area?

Some quick images of the tank. I ended up getting double hob overflows, one of the boxes pulled away from the edge but I managed to seal it up with some silicone.
Now up to plumbing and redoing the flow the lines. Question, do I do dual overflows or just do the one?Click image for larger version

The tank had black paint on it which I removed and painted it lighter blue/grey which also matched my walls LOL

So I had some time this weekend and I was trying to plumb the tank as I had a bunch o PVC parts. Should I go with one overflow or 2

Don't mind the plumbing on the first overflow box. I have to cut and rejig as this was how it came.
