Just Keeping Beautiful Discus as Pets.

This thread is being started for people interested in keeping Discus fish as pets only with no intentions of breeding them.
This is by no means intended as a snub for those of you who do breed them for both enjoyment and profit. In fact, much of what you have learned can be applied here and helpful to others.
But lets face it, no matter how much you talk about and recommend bare bottom tanks, the reality is, people who just want to keep these fish as pets, and I do mean "pets," want to know all the how's and best way to do it in a planted (liver or plastic, in my case both), gravel bottom tank.
I'm not talking about the race to grow them out quickly either, because just how important is that for most non breeders? It's Simply is not.
The other way to honor this hobby is by addressing those interested in just keeping these fish alive, healthy and happy.
I would like to see tank size, gravel depth, filter types, most hardy of Discus types, other fish for such a tank (I myself have only two other fish in my tank, both cats, that's it), plant types and a weekly maintenance schedule.
Personally I have a 40 gallon tank, with 5 discus in it.
They are about nine months old now ranging in size from 3.5" to 4.5," they were dime size when I got them and have always been in a graveled planted display tank.
I clean the gravel once a week and do a 50% water change at the same time. I also do two 25% water changes each week spaced about every two days.
I keep the tank simply set up for display with two live plants and 3 plastic ones, a nice piece of drift wood and a few stones, and two air stones for good aeration of the water.
    I use a Marineland Emperor 280 filter.
Of course I did all my research first before putting this tank together to get it working the way I wanted it too.
I actually maintain my pH at 6 all the time and do water changes directly from the tap into the tank. Taboo, not really, since I've kept angel fish alive for 7 years like this...I feel guilty not using a water conditioner, but I don't like adding unnecessary chemicals to my tanks. The water in my area happens to be very good, just lucky in that respect. But of course every body should have their's check before doing this, and even then check it every so often if you can, too make sure nothing strange was done to it by your local water company. You should do what you feel is safest and works best for you.
I experienced only one episode of fin and tail rot on two of the fish, narrowing down the cause from uneaten beef heart, which had been removed from their diets, there for advising any future problems that may cause. Of course that also occurred on the one week I was away for a few days and my Mom over feed the fish a bit...she did it too the dog too, she has this thing about feeding pets a lot of food.
I do not feed them any live foods thus avoiding any parasites that might enter the tank that way.
My fish are on a diet consisting of Colorbits, Spectrum, dried Blood Worms, frozen Brime Shrimp, and Frozen Red Blood Worms.
They are all happy and healthy and growing nicely to my satisfaction with none of them showing any signs of being too thin or stunted...well, the low discus in the pecking order, but we must learn to love that fish too. they are being kept as "pets."
But I found that even it has been growing, just at a slower rate then the others, so how bad can that be?
So for all you who have questions about starting such a tank for Discus as pets, ask them here.
I don't have all the answers, I'm still learning, but there are a lot of members here who do.
And if any one is wondering why I think this thread might be of importance. Well, I was reading a post from someone who's discus laid eggs and they hatch in his community tank.
Of course we know their probably not going to survive, but he didn't know how to deal with it.
We just need to tell them, that almost all fish will breed or try to breed and will lay eggs from time to time, and if you have no interest in rasing the fry, simply remove the eggs as you see them, the fish will get over, it's no big deal.
We also need to let people know that discus are a lot more hardy then we give them credit for and they can be kept happy and healthy in a beautiful Aquarium Environment.

Good post! My 50 gallon bow front is planted with a Filstar XP3 a sponge and a Penguin 330 on it. I did have gravel in it but find it is much easier to maintain it now with just a one stone depth layer on the bottom and potted plants (plus driftwood). Sampson and Goliath grew up in this tank since they were 2" and they are over 5" now and round, so it can be done! (plus I use a python with warm tap too). There are other types of fish in there too and at one point I had 6 discus in there (now only two since Sampson and Goliath paired up and were pushing all the other discus in a corner so I put them in my other tank). You know my discus in my planted tank look more relaxed and brighter than my BB tank? I'm going to start adding some potted plants to the BB also. Yes, my first discus gave me the "bug" and so I have a pair of red/whites I'm trying to breed, plus some wanna be breeders in my other tank. But Sampson and Goliath are pets .

        Julie,
Here's a link to previously posted images of my tank:

7 months into keeping Discus and so far so good. The Wadimi Blue Discus and the 2 German Red Turquoises Discus were dime size when I got them..OK the blue one was a little larger and has grown the fastest. When they were about 3 inches, I added two other fish. I love keeping these fish. I'm also having great fun photographing

When I get a chance, I'll take some newer pics and Post them here, but really not much has changed in there for a while...the fish have just gotten a little bigger

Probably the best way of keeping Discus and any fish or other creature as a pet for that matter is to understand their needs and just love having them.
There should be no mystery on how to keep them alive and well and happy.
Simply do what works for you, do what works for the fish and you'll always have succes!

Re: Just Keeping Beautiful Discus as Pets.

I just want beautiful discus to display in my planted tank(s). I do not get emotionally attached to any individual fish, so they are not my "pets" in that sense although I try to give them the best care I could. If I aquire/grow out some bigger, rounder, more colorful, less peppering discus, I have no problem replacing the current ones by giving them away or selling them cheap.

I always drool over the "perfect" discus pictures that I see on the forums. Size DOES matter to me. A 5" discus is nowhere near magnificent as a 7-8" discus. It is not the speed of growth that matters to me, I want big/huge discus when they are fully grown. However, based on my research on the forums and my own experience, growing up slowly (less feeding) usually means somewhat stunted discus 5-6" max. So I do feed my fish a lot and do a bit more water changes, although nowhere near what many bare bottom people do. There is always a point of diminishing returns so I try to find the acceptable balance point of fast discus growth and not creating too much work for myself. Each needs to find his/her own balance point.

I use a BB tank for growing out juveniles, but I also have a 75 gallon display tank stocked with adult fish. I have an Eheim 2229 wet/dry filter on it, and change 50% of the water weekly. I have olive nerites (salt-water snails) to clean the glass and eat all of the algae. The only other maintenance is to thin the plants as needed. I feed once a day. (I've posted pics of this tank before). I recently took out some of the gravel and replaced it with sand in order to give the discus a feeding ground. They really prefer it over the gravel - much less food goes to the cories!

                  Nice tank Terry!
I never heard about using any type of salt water snail in a fresh water environment before.
See, I learned something new already
I'm lucky to have the space for one tank, so I make the best of it.
How long has this tank been up and running?
Have you experienced any problems with your set up?
From the pic's it looks great!

                    Beautiful Tank and fish Terry!
Very interesting your choice of snails.
You have any idea how many you have in there?
Mininum amount you think it takes to keep glass clean?

Those kind of snails available at basic LFS?

I take it if you have to do any meds you do it in hospital tank?

If it was a BB tank and you were going to need to do a medication in tank do you know if the snails would be in trouble on certain meds if in there?

Re: Just Keeping Beautiful Discus as Pets.

This tank has been running since July 1995, but I've only had the current discus group in it for about one and a half years. My oldest previous discus was about 8 years old. I've not had any problems with the tank that I can remember. (I try to clean the Eheim filter at least once a year, preferably twice a year).

Here's a link to an entire thread about the snails (Other people found neater looking snails than I did). http://forum.simplydiscus.com//showthread.php?t=44008

I put a little stand in front of the aquarium and the cats love to sit and watch the bristlenose pleco.

                      Greg -

I use a BB tank whenever I need to medicate. Check out the thread for how to order snails. I've never seen them in the local stores. I have about 10 snails in the tank, and I could probably use less now - there just isn't enough algae anymore! For some reason, the snails don't do a good job of keeping BB tanks clean - I can't figure out why.

Jm - the tank looks very nice - I like the colour contrast of the pigeons/blues against the planted environment.
Terry - looks very nice also.
                        Do you feed beefheart?

You have the planted tank down to a science when they live until 8.

                          Brilliant post this is................

I agree that the planted tank truely is a great option. the bare bottom is a good way of controlling the water conditions and help the beginner get to understand his fish, but a planted tank brings out the true personality of the fish.

If you keep the water changes up, then there should not be any problems. I add water in the tank straight from the tap, I have been keeping fish for 15 years and never lost a single due to this or have a brake out of disease. I use conditioner though cause my water isnt right for fish.

When I bred oscars, i did big direct water changes and the temp dropped a good 3° to 4° with no problems. I have had the same with discus before and till today there is always a 3° difference in temp at the end of a W/C .

I feed them tetra bits, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and beefheart mix.
