I heard that some keep discus fish with stingrays. Is it possible and what should be the size differences between both By keeping stingrays with discus are sandy bed essential or barebottom is alright. Will stingrays kill corydoras and tetra fish at night.

Re: Discus fish with sting ray
Some people do keep them together,, The thing to remember is if the fish fits in the stingrays mouth, its possibly dinner. Awhile back there was a video of some idiot feeding a discus to his stingray.. Caused quite a lot of Angry comments by Discus keepers.

Re: Discus fish with sting ray
In my dreams I would have a tank large enough to keep Rays only. If I had Discus to dispose of, I could just put it in with the Rays. Live food is the best food.Mama BearComment

Re: Discus fish with sting ray
We had Motoro stingrays in a big tank with discus. We had a male and 2 females. Stingrays really do like a sandy substrate to dig into. I wouldn't keep them in a bare bottom tank... they wouldn't be happy. They got along fine with the discus while they were young. But the male grew quite large and aggressive. He started attacking the discus. He would smash them up against the side of the tank and hold them there. I had to physically separate them. I don't recall him killing any of the discus, but there were quite a few frayed fins. We eventually had to rehome the stingrays.Comment

Re: Discus fish with sting ray
I have kept a single Hystrix Stingray (8in male) in a 150 with 9 adult discus before, no problems there. But as you suspected, they will go for tetras and corys at night, especially since tetras like to hang near the bottom when resting.Comment

Rays do hunt at night, smothering their prey and eating them, whole or in pieces. They are actually active in all levels of the water column also. Mine swim mid & upper column daily, in & out of the sump return line currents, and even sideways along the vertical walls flood the tank.
I had to remove some female Malawi cichlids from an all male display recently. They were 5-7” & I honestly thought they’d be ok in my ray tank. The very next morning 3 of the 4 were “mysteriously” gone.
My ray tank has a sand substrate but no decor. I guess it might be possible if there was some nice root ball pieces of wood for the discus to take cover in, but I would imagine it would be very stressful for the discus and therefore not a good fit. Definitely a stern no for corys & smaller fishLast edited by danotaylor; 01-09-2025, 01:05 PM.Comment
