Congo tetra

Was just wondering has any one kept Congo tetra with discus. Are they ok to keep together?

I have kept a school of congos with discus. They school very well when in a group of 12 plus. However, my congos kept dying one by one. Not sure if the water was too warm or my fish weren't healthy, but I ended up losing all of them. If I come across a nice healthy group, I might give it a try again.

I have eight of them right now, but not with my discus anymore. They steal too much food from the discus and eat like pigs. I switched to lemon tetra and it's much better.

JMO, but I think keeping African fish with South American fish is lame. They do share similar water conditions.

I think you'd need to hold the temp towards the low end of what's commonly used for discus- the literature describes the right temps for Congos to be more in the range of 74-81F.

Here in metro Denver, Blkrob has been very successful keeping gold tetras w/ discus- they'd breed like crazy in his thickly planted 135... he was giving them away, trading them back at his LFS. Haven't heard form him in awhile...

I currently have 6, 4 female and 2 males, in my 180. watched a spawn from them the other morning which was pretty cool. True they are active feeders but the discus quickly learned to come up and eat Al's black worms from my hand. My temp is 82-84 degrees and haven't had a loss or any problems with them. Very pretty fish and I enjoy them very much.

Hmmmmmmmmm CONGO tetra, think the name says it all.......African............... Very pretty............. I think Blonds are pretty but I wouldn't keep them with my Discus????????

Congo Tetras can be kept with Discus but both do best in their own tanks.
Congo Tetras do better around 80*F than they do at 84*F. They are also a little too exuberant as large adults and disturb the more leisurely feeding typical of Discus. I have a bias against keeping Africans with South American fishes. I admit it.
I really enjoyed a large group of adults I kept by themselves in a 33 long.
They received a few hours of morning light and would spawn nearly every morning and the way they glittered in the sun made magnificent display. They were fed small earth worms almost every day which helped keep them in breeding condition.
Congo tetras are a beautiful species but they show off their best when kept differently from Discus. They enjoy much stronger water currents than Discus.
I believe smaller South American tetras make the better choices as Discus tank mates.

I thought about adding tetras to my discus tank - I was looking at some ones discus tank the other day with tetras added and all anybody commented on was the discus
Its all about the big boys - my opinion
