Discus Photography Contest

Get your cameras ready! Simply Discus would like to invite you to enter the first ever Simplydiscus.com international photography contest. We are looking for quality images that relate to four subjects of special interest to our hobby: Domestic Discus, Wild Caught Discus, Planted Tanks and Miscellaneous (see rules below). The competition is open to all Simply Discus members world-wide who became a member prior to 12-06-2004, and who are amateur photographers. Please review the rules below before entering.

Contest entries must be submitted by email (see email address in rules below) no later than midnight, December 31, 2004 PST. Forty finalists will be selected, 10 for each of the 4 categories. From these 40 finalists, four first place category winners, four second place category winners and four third place category winners will be chosen. In addition, the three highest scoring photographs will be selected as grand prize winners. The winners will be announced on January 22nd, 2005. The entries of all winners and finalists will be displayed in the Simplydiscus.com photo section and will receive consideration for possible publication in an international printed media.

Category winners will be awarded prizes consisting of Simplydiscus t-shirts, Simplyware, books, TDS meters from Dirt Cheap RO, and additional prizes may be available as well as details are complete. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Grandprize winners will each receive a beautiful hand-carved, hand-painted trophy, donated by Great Lakes Discus, Amazing Aquatics and Simplydiscus.com, valued at over $200 each. In addition, each grand prize winner will receive a Discus Anatomy Lithograph, donated by member Peggy Stiles (cartoon).

CONTEST RULES

WHO MAY ENTER:

All members of Simplydiscus.com who have registered prior to 12-06-2004. Professional photographers who earn more than half of their income taking pictures are not eligible. The owners of Simplydiscus or its designated agents will determine eligibility.

WHAT TO ENTER:

There will be 4 categories in this contest.

Best Domestic Discus— defined as a discus that is a result of captive breeding. (Judging Criteria: shape, finnage, color of strain and eye proportion. Tiebreaker: quality of photograph)

Best Wild Discus— defined as a discus of any species that has been caught from the Amazon River and/or its tributaries. (Judging Criteria: shape, finnage, color of strain and eye proportion. Tiebreaker: quality of photograph)

Best Planted Tank— defined as an aquarium that contains discus and live plants. Additional species may be included in this picture. (Judging criteria: landscaping, lighting, aesthetics and clarity of photograph.)

Miscellaneous— defined as any photograph that contains at least 1 living discus (ie,… planted, decorated, group shot, etc… be creative). (Judging criteria: composition, lighting, aesthetics and clarity of photograph.)

HOW TO ENTER:

Please Copy/Paste and complete the entry form below and email along with your photograph to oodi@simplydiscus.com Submit up to three photographs per category, however, the same photograph may be entered in more than one category (Example:A planted tank photograph can also be entered in the Misc.). Only one entry form per photograph will be accepted, so if you are entering more than one fish, and/or category, please submit and entry form for EACH CATEGORY AND PHOTOGRAPH. Entries with missing or incomplete information will not be accepted.

Digital Submissions:

Photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible. Please copy/paste the entry form below and submit it in your email along with your photograph. Complete a separate form for each photo submitted. Photographs must be in .jpeg, .jpg form. Files submitted may not be larger than 1,024k (1Mb). Please keep a high-resolution copy of the photograph as finalists may be asked to submit a high-resolution file for possible media publication.

Cropped photos are eligible, but those that have been digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered are not.

ENTRY DEADLINE:

Contest entries must be submitted by email to oodi@simplydiscus.com no later than midnight, December 31, 2004 PST.

JUDGING:

Judging will be conducted by designated Simplydiscus judges. Since these judges are independent member volunteers and since only one moderator will know the identity of the photographer, all members and most moderators are eligible to participate. Winning photographs will be announced on January 22, 2005. All entries will remain anonymous until the end of the contest.

Forty finalists will be selected, 10 for each of the 4 categories. From these 40 finalists, four first place category winners, four second place category winners and four third place category winners will be chosen. In addition, the three photographs with the highest over-all scores will be selected as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grand Prize winners.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Photos previously published in printed publication, or that violate or infringe upon another person's copyright, are not eligible.

Winning photograph owners will retain rights the to the photograph (excluding public display in the photography section of Simplydiscus.com).

The owners of Simplydiscus.com or its designated agents will determine the final resolution to any problems, complaints or issues arising from this contest.
