For anyone interested, I'm a moron!

It hit me last night while falling asleep. I used two pieces of ceramic tile (kind with the clay backside) attached to my driftwood to weigh it down under the substrate.

Tested a left-over piece I had in the garage in a bucket with tap water and an air stone. BOOM. Not even two hours in and the water was at 8.2. seeing that purple in the test tube was a huge bummer and a huge success.

Took the better part of the day but I was able to get those tiles out. Replaced them with a couple pieces of thick acrylic I had laying around from a tank I cut up.

Left my original substrate in but did add 100 lbs of fresh sand on top.

Added a ton of plants I had growing out in my sump and besides a bit of cloud in the water we are good to

    Solid 7.4 ph so far.

I did acclimate the fish slowly, maybe it’s just me but they seem way less darty. Those discus are even coming right up to the glass now. With all the chaos from today everyone still ate like pigs!

When you take tap water and aerate it you can get a ph swing. Leaving the bucket of water aerating for at least 24 hrs might give a more accurate result

Glad you seem to have figured out the issue, Nick! Tank is looking good.
