I love my planted rainbow fish tank

My 125 planted rainbow fish. The plants are healthy and spreading and I have many strains of the large rainbow fish constantly swimming from one side of the tank to the other. This tank is totally opposite from my Discus tanks, but for now at least their is some activity in it.

All I do with my Discus is feed and change water and wait for pairs to form. I know that when I see some real pairing going on that I'll be on top of the world, but it has been such a very very long wait.

What kind of Rainbows do you have?

I know what you mean about the discus, I needed some other more active fish and set up a tank with wild African tetras- several types. They are amazing to watch school in my 180 gallon.

I have 8 each of Bosemami, Turquoise, Millenniums,Neons, and 5 Austrailans. Also in the tank are a bunch of bristlenose of various types, some 4 Pearl Gouramis, that I had before, and a number of Magenta Mystery snails.

Liz, I can remember the first time I saw a rainbow fish and thinking what a unique and beautiful fish. Do you happen to have a picture of your tank?

I do, but I'll take another today. The plants have filled in and I have more fish in the tank since I took the first pic.

              Love it!

And for the same reason I've always kept discus in a community tank.
I did keep rainbows with discus about 10 years ago... Can't remember if there were any problems but I know that I had them for quite a while.
Honestly I just don't get the whole discus-bare bottom thing.... Obviously with the exception for breeding. . .

I agree with the bare bottom thing I don’t care for it, it's kind of like a puppy mill mentality. Dee

I always thought that discus only barebottem looked like some kind of science projects... not very appealing and not worth my time.

Mamma Bears tank on the other hand I could watch for hours ;-)

I'm not knocking my Discus tanks. But after having waited so long to see pairing and baby raising I was ready for something different to look at.

Pat, I have taken pictures of individual Rainbows. They are very beautiful subjects but they are so active it takes a lot of camera clicks to get a good one.

OMG Liz, they are gorgeous. Just look at the beautiful color and scale definition. Nicely done Liz. If I lived close I would be over in a heartbeat with a camera.

Dee, make sure your photos are 2MBs or less.

                            Beautiful pics Mamma Bear

And to each their own. . .
But on the very small scale of breeding that I've done it's been my experience that a pair coming from the community tank end up being much better parents. They partner better in protecting and caring. It seems my pairs from a discus only tank take much longer to figure out parenting and sometimes never do.
Again I'm only using about a dozen experiences in this conclusion so I can't say it's a fact but the difference I see is definitely noticeable.
