Hello all,
I'm new here but have been picking up a lot of advice here for my son's Discus tank I found myself responsible for recently. I'm thankful to have found this forum and especially with Al at the helm!
I've had freshwater tanks before and have maintained my son's tanks before but I'm still quite the novice and find myself with a problem I'm not able to solve after messing around with it for over 2 weeks.
Problem:
I did a 40% water change 2 weeks ago and the tank became cloudy/foggy within a day and kept getting more cloudy as the days went until finally the water took on a green tint after about a week.
I did another change (35%) 4 days ago and the green continues to get greener.
Last night I changed 5 gallons (17%).
Still green and cloudy - see picture.
This tank has been very stable and easy to care for in the past.
Algae has not been a problem at all except for all the dark algae that covers the decorations.
Here are the particulars:
30 Gal
Tank has been running well for 2+ years
Community fish (22)
No live plants
HOB filter
I usually vac & change 30% to 40% of the water at 3 weeks - I don't get much at all out of the rocks
I use tap water from our charcoal tank and resin softener whole house filter
I add Stress Coat plus with water changes
I've been adding Stress Zyme for the past 8 weeks at half dose (full dose every two weeks rather than weekly)
Large pebble bottom.
My son keeps a bag of ceramic tubes in the HOB filter bottom.
I put new charcoal in yesterday (I put a few tablespoons in the filter sump in a bag) and removed my small bag of ChemiPure that had been in the filter 8 weeks. The filter is flowing and moving water well.
I was using a 2-stage fiber filter pad put over the filter cartridge for additional water clarity for awhile and removed that yesterday also.
For sake of argument I think we can rule out waste buildup and overfeeding.
pH: 8.0 (usually 7.6-7.8)
Ammon: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: I can't tell if it's 40, 80 or 160 - they all look the same red to me but usually runs 40-80. This is before the water change.
Phosphates: 1.0 to 2.0
Temp: 76
What else?

So I'm looking for causes and correction advice or ideas?
Thanks!
Greg
