Mystery Snails genetics

A short while back Liz sent a few eggs clusters of mystery snails and I hatched them out. They are doing really well. Any one know anything about the color inheritance?

I don't know much. My piss poor high school science education didn't go much farther than the Mendallian discoveries. From what I understand, there are so many differences in colors of mystery snails. I have some young Ivories on order so I can participate in a study. I also ordered a group of Magentas because I like them so much. But from what I have read, the best way to breed Magentas is not one to the other. I also like the blues, which I see you got a bunch of and I have a few of. I'll be segregating by the colors I prefer and breed each to each to see what I get. Even though I'm no longer breeding Discus (well myaybe just one more time, if Chuck's fish come through) I can't help myself I have to breed something. Snails may not be majestic like Discus, but they present an interesting learning experience.

I have always like mystery snails, AL if you ever want to get rid of a few of those blue's just let me know.

Those blue ones are really neat. My kids always want one of these big snails, but many years ago I had some and they ate every plant I had. Granted, I didn't have many plants 20+ years ago, but I did have some bulb plants.

Those must have been Apple snails, Jacob. Mystery snails leave plants alone.

Possibly. I do believe they were called apple snails. But I have spixi snails (sometimes called apple snails) now to eat hydra and they basically leave plants alone. The ones I have now are very different than the ones I had 20+ years ago (pictured below). This is the only picture I have of them. They laid pinkish clusters up above the water level as I recall. Honestly, though, I probably wasn't the best care giver at the time. I know mystery snails are a bit different than bladder snails and I don't think I was doing anything special for them. So they might not have had a choice but to eat the plants.



I might have to get a mystery snail or two next time the kids are asking.

I agree with Liz here.. this tank is jamb packed with mystery snails and they haven't touch the potted tiger lotus,crypts or submerged pothos .
