    112 gallon tropheus display

This his the talk tjat will eventually house my return to discus group. For now I am growing out a mixed group of lake tanganyika tropheus species. Very social, highly active species of fishes. I will be adding 1 more variant in the next few months, a line bred variant called red bishops, which are a natural mutation of the species black “caramba”. A splash of lighter red to round it out. Once these guys are all 3-5” I will sell off my Malawis from the 500gal, moves these, and get some discus this tank.
    Hope you enjoy! Peace.

Danny the video is great. Definitely an active group of fish. They will love the 500g I am sure. I thrilled though to hear you plan on turning the 112 g to a discus Tank. It will be awesome seeing Discus in your tanks again.

Agreed Al! With our oldest off to college in a year I am heading into a season of life with a little less time pressure so providing appropriate care for discus will be manageable. Looking forward to it!!

Thanks Brian!! I am too mate. I entered the discus arena under the illusion that a water change every week or 2 would be sufficient to have happy healthy discus, since that’s what worked with every other species I have kept over the previous 35yrs. I did research a little on the front side but discovered and learned a lot about the necessary requirements to have happy healthy discus once I became active here in SD. With my family, church & work life commitments I realized after a year or so I could not sustain those requirements at this stage of my life, so to prevent the loss of my stunning discus from Dennis Discus Fish, I sold them and went back to African cichlids.
I have enjoyed reconnecting with the SD community and will continue to be active even though I’m not currently keeping discus.
              More to come!!

I moved the tropheus grow outs to a 125gal a few weeks back. There’s a vid of their new home at the bottom of this post…
I have a young group of duboisi maswa (blue face, yellow band, black body) that I am growing out. 3 young females were holding today so during my water change I caught them out and stripped them. My expectations were very low, almost nonexistent actually cause they’re very young, but to my great surprise discovered 4 with just a tad of yolk sac left and 6 full free swimmers, and 12 eggs, 10 of which appear viable. Bloody marvelous!
They all love water change day. Here’s a few snaps post refill…

Thank you for the kind words Jake, greatly appreciated mate!
Now I’m hoping my care and water change regime can achieve the same breeding success in my stingray tank

Thanks Al! That is life in a tropheus tank, they seriously never stop until lights out. They are notoriously difficult to photograph for that reason. Especially with basic gear. I have a small screen, very basic iPhone that I use for my vids and pics. Looking at the pics on a PC at work tonight I see much easier how out of focus they are LOL

The fish look great Danny and love the video. So active. When you "strip" the fish you are collecting the eggs? Do you milk the males also? to fertilize the eggs?

Thanks Pat! I will attach a short video here of a pair of my ikola tropheus spawning. Basically they swim in circles nibbling at each others anal fin. The female deposits eggs typically 1-2 at a time, picks them up in her mouth and then as she nibbles the males anal fin, he releases sperm which fertilizes the eggs. The female then carries the eggs for 28 days or more until the fry are fully free swimming. The eggs are large so 8-16 is about normal depending on the size of the female. At the very end of the vid if you look carefully you can see a bulge under her mouth from the eggs she is carrying. She won't eat for about 14 days, and then will carefully pick up a pellet or 2 here and there after that. They lose quite a bit of conditioning which is why I like to strip the eggs/fry at about the 10-14 mark so she can start eating normally again.
To “strip” a female you catch them, gently squeeze either side of the gill plate to open the mouth and dip in & out of a container with tank water and the eggs or fry fall out of her mouth. Ta-dah!
I will get a short vid in the next day or so to show you fry in a fry saver and eggs in the egg tumbler!

Very cool video Danny and I look forward to seeing the fry. What happens if you leave the fry with the parents. Do they get ate by the other fish?
