Though I don't have any now, Wild Rams are the only kind I've ever had and I've always had them with dithers, usually Nannostomus. The Rams were front and center most of the time.

Aaron, they really do prefer dithers.. The guppys were like a switch going off. The only tank I have where the wild rams are comfortable alone is when theres alot of them...

I like your plant anchors.

High grade stainless steel nuts. .. I dont know the grade steel but they came from a cell tower site and I have a big old box of them. They hold old up with zero rust in anynof my tanks... even in my brine shrimp bowls..big fan of the RRR.. reduce reuse recycle.

Neat write-up Al - I'm sure others will find this very helpful if they have rams, or shy fish in general and are looking to get them a little more active. I love seeing pothos in tanks! How are you finding it taking to being submerged? Any melting or die off?

Thanks Jake.I use it submerged all the time.. The leaves last months under water and if I let it grow out if the tank its very happy... If not even without leaves it sends out roots for a long time. If it starts getting a little worn looking I just snip another vine and through it the tank.

They will even come to the front of the tank at feeding time.. especially for baby brine shrimp. I feed that daily to the pairs.

Seems we have alot of interest in Rams here lately. I have a bunch of pairs I am working with and have been playing around with different set ups.

Obviously you can take a pair of Rams and throw them in a 10 gal bare tank alone and breed them.It works perfectly fine. But what if you are like me and just get bored easy or want more from your 10 gal tank?


When I was trying to breed my wild rams they just were too shy... They did not like the bare tank. So I added some pothos cuttings and a few river stones and oak leaves. That helped a bit.. Problem was the leaves of the pothos were getting algae so I added a few small bristlenose.. problem solved.. Still the wild Rams just hid...obviously we were not going to get spawning like this. I decided to add some cherry shrimp to entice the Rams.. The shrimp disappeared as expected but the rams still mostly hid. I decided to add a few of my endler Guppies to the tank. I expected a blood bath but it didn't happen. The Rams ignored the Guppies and miraculously came out and settled down and bred. Ironically the guppies have even bred but as expected most of the guppy fry disappeared..not all though. Thrilled I decided to to add some glass shrimp as a clean up crew. These worked out great. There is only an air driven sponge in the tank.

The result has been a low maintenance 10 gal breeding tank. I literally do nothing but change a little water every other day.. no wiping tanks etc.

Anyhow if you have limited real estate you may want to try a set up.like this..

Im sure if wanted better guppy survival a little guppy grass clump would work fine.
