What non discus are you working with?

I have spent the weekend cleaning tanks . these have sat empty a long time. a few get discus once I decide on exactly what kind of discus I want to breed again. But a bunch are smaller tanks.I have several populations of endler guppies going now.. I'm thinking of sucking up some wild. American flag fish and wild sailfin mollies to breed.But I made the mistake of looking at old pics and I am really missing. Rotkeils, wild rams,and wild angels.

Obviously I am looking for ideas to light a fire under my lazy backside..Give me some ideas for my smaller tanks (5-30 gal)

What about some fancy plecos Al? I’m downsizing my 125gal but still wanna work with something in a 29 or 40.
I traded my tropheus group and 18 troph juvies for 8 L046 & 3 L136 but they’re tiny still. As Chuck knows well, it takes YEARS for these guys to reach sexual maturity.
Tonight I ordered 5 (2M3) adult L333 gold AA grade to have a crack at to keep my breeding interests satiated. Here’s 4 of them plus ordered an extra male.

This winter I may have a crack at a discus pair

Hey Al, I do not think you have this in mind but I continue to work with regal jumping spiders. I have a young female who I think might be mature so waiting to see if she has one molt left. I have a male just waiting for her

I'm not sure, last I had heard these are no longer in the wild.
They seem to be very hard to acquire.

Discus of course also working on several types of rams, and multiple Cares species livebearers , also have 2 zebra plecos left not sure of their sex but hoping, also have some CPDs, exsul ciclids, several types of swords including wild Montezuma , and of course albino gold dragon bristle nose plecos. Random others as well... the list grows daily unfortunately an addiction ...

I wouldn't say I'm working with these since I'm not trying to breed them, but I have a group of 35 Sterbai. I started with 14 but a baby occasionally manages to escape the adults' hungry mouths. I also have a 90 and 100 gallon with adult Rainbows. Most are accidently home bred mutts, but they're pretty mutts. The problem is that they're getting old and occasionally one dies. I'm down to just 11 now. Once a couple more bite the dust, I'll consolidate them into one tank. At that point I'll be looking for something inexpensive to put in the other tank. I'm thinking of some Gouramies, maybe some Rosey Barbs, and I'm not sure yet what else.

No Chuck, I got them from a Band page. Marcel is the seller, and he also uses aquabid. Roseline17 is his aquabid name.

Breeding size fancy plecos like the L136C in the link are expensive. That pair is $750.
I went with the L333 good AA group because they’re more accessible to me price wise, $250 plus shipping for the 5, and it’s my first time w plecos in 42 years. Apparently they’re one of the easiest hypancystrus sp. to get breeding. We’ll see…

I know of a guy here in Ohio that breeds and sells Beani mate. If you’re looking for some lemme know and I will send you a link to get in touch. His breeders are productive and she ships out of Lima in Ohio.
Definitely not a species Al could work with in 30gals or less though

Definitely a tad big for my smaller tanks, but cool that someone is working with them!

Plecos are a definite possibility, there are so many really interesting ones and I have only bred bristlenose and L134 leopard Frogs, so thats a a good suggestion.

I'm considering some natives like pygmy sunfish, and would love to try rainbow darters, though the darters could be challenging needing cooler temps.

In the past I would go to the area LFS and could always find rarities ,but now most LFS here are gone, just have the chains and the few LFS that are here still really don't bring in the oddballs.
I would really love to find something like these ports...

There’s tons of different fancy shrimp too Al. Neocaridina of you don’t wanna mess w param’s. Caridina if you want low ph soft water varieties….but they are much more pricey

Not sure I am exactly working with them but I pulled a couple of angelfish pairs from my wife's community tank. They will be used to fund my fish house build and discus purchase. Had them in my office for about 3 weeks. Got between 200-300 fry that I am growing out. Anyone have a current wholesale market price for common angelfish?

I've been thinking long and hard since you started this thread, Al, and I've decided how I will stock my 100 gallon tank once I move the Rainbows into the tank next door with the other Rainbows. The tank already has an Amazon Sword on the right corner, a huge annubius on driftwood in the middle with a bit of bolbitis behind it. I'll add some vals in the back and some red root floaters on top.

The fish will be a group of a dozen or more Congo tetras, a dozen or more rummy nose rasboras and about 4 pearl gouramis. I can picture it and it makes for a very pretty centerpiece tank that's right in front of the sofa where I spend more time than I care to admit. The plan is finished. All I need to do now is save my pennies.
