Break an Egg, Make an Omelette - Or Something Like That

As some of you may know, my wife and I moved into our 100 year old home back in 2021. We loved a lot about the house, but some of the spaces just weren't completed or previously remodeled to our tastes (along with some questionable design choices), so we've slowly been working through the most impactful spaces for us to feel like it is our home. We did a kitchen remodel back in 2023 which I documented here as well.

We're back once again, this time tackling a bathroom remodel to make it the master bathroom of our dreams. We had been thinking about the design of this bathroom for quite a while, and we wanted to go with a western US theme; colors of the desert, cactus, etc. But before we get to the final pictures, first, let's look at what we were starting with.

The bathroom itself was pretty decent in size. Raw square footage is around 100sqft, but we didn't like the layout and how it was a little closed off. Ignore the blue tape on the floor, this was me measuring some fixtures and space out for my wife to visualize what we could go with.

The shower was closed off, and very dark since, when the room was remodeled, only one overhead light was installed (the dreaded boob lights).

Also, if you ever wondered what it would be like to use the commode while simultaneously looking out at your neighbors house, this is what it would look like. We absolutely hated that it was positioned this way.

Next up was obviously demo. We opened up the entire space by removing the small linen closet and knocking down the shower. We were really focused with getting this project done quickly, so there won't be as many detailed pictures here as was in the kitchen remodel. Since the bathroom is in the second floor where our master bedroom is planned to be, this didn't disrupt the use of our main floor bathroom. That said, with the planned large soaking tub, my wife was definitely all for getting it all done ASAP without really documenting a whole lot.

This is the old vanity side which will eventually become the shower side. Drywall, flooring, and subfloor removed for access to plumbing.

The same was done on the old shower side, which will become the vanity and commode side.

With everything exposed, the waste and supply plumbing were moved to their new locations. You'll start to see how the layout is being planned in these two images.

And with everything finalized for locations, the next big milestone is covering it all up with new subfloor. Note that the middle section of old subfloor was also removed at this point to make room for the new.

And here's the big jump. I was going away for a work trip in early March, and my deadline was before I left, so I apologize for not taking enough photos, but here's the final result. I hired out the shower glass to be done by someone who had way more experience and muscle getting large panes of glass in without destroying them. Also, the decor choices were done by my wife (and ignore the pair of socks on the ground).

Super nice job Jake The bath design is fairly new? Reason I ask is I had never seen this particular design except in some of the homes we recently looked at and the new house does have one. I like your remodel, flows way better!

The bath design was a mixture of both of our tastes (I like darker colors with light accents - my wife is very much on the natural tones with wood, etc). We didn't really see any good designs we liked, but we found a lot of inspiration online and Peyton used pinterest a lot to find ideas. It's a mixture of modern bathroom design (open bathing, glass shower surround, etc) and some mid-mod with the mirrors and vanity. I definitely feel like it flows a lot better, and the room feels much bigger thanks to the walls being removed.

Appreciate that Jacob. It was a rough 4 weeks of after work and weekends while balancing all other life things so I appreciate the recognition.

I like what you did. That was one ugly bathroom before. All chopped up with so much wasted space. You transformed it into a spacious. pleasing whole. Great job.
