This little fellow here is a royal handful right now because of his age and upbringing circumstances... But he really is an Amazing little furball to have survived on the city streets and not gone full on feral.

The same thing is true of dogs, Al. Few people adopt black dogs, unless they're purebred, of course. I was always a sucker for the black ones for just that reason. Back when I owned between 8 and 10 dogs at a time, the majority were always throw-away blackies.

My niece Caylee decided to go to school in New York city and she found a stray cat in the alleyway. She decided to bring him inside to stay and named him Elton. So after awhile Elton went to live with my sister in Colorado. My sister Lynda does not have a clue (or the patience) to deal with animals and her methods are to dominate them. So she would scruff him whenever he did something she did not like. Now her husband Tim was kind and patience with Elton.

Overtime Elton got a reputation of biting people. So one time when I visited Lynda and Tim I would not try to interact with Elton. One morning I was sitting at the table having my morning coffee with my sister, I got up to get something and Elton leaped up on the chair I was sitting in and bite me on the upper arm. I do nothing to provoke him (as far as I could tell). One of my thoughts concerning Elton biting people (but not Lynda) is it was his way of protesting Lynda's treatment of him. Not sure that makes sense lol.

Thats really Sad Liz. Didnt realize black dogs were the same. I figured that the superstition about black cats and bad luck and witches were to blame.

Poor Elton it sounds like your sister just doesn't understand how to interact with Cats. Pat in your experience With Elton it was probably a territory issue. Cats tend to see us as other cats. Usually though biting isn't their first response.. Scratching and hissing is a safer way for them to communicate. Biting usually occurs after the target has been immobilized with Paws. Cinder will play with me roughly and grab my hand and hold it while he bites it but never to the point of hurting me. Its more like a puppy nawing on a toy...its always followed by licking.

Of course he can get a little wild and cop an attitude..

But thats natural if they get over stimulated. Play time with a young cat is critical to their development. It allows thema way to vent their natural wild tendencies at a time when they are developmentally most active. I have to play with Cinder several.times a day and let him "hunt" and "kill" toys or his nature gets the best of him and we have to separate him from his older more mellow feline house mates for a little cool.down time.

I think you nailed it Al with Elton. My sister did said he likes to be in that chair alot lol.

Al, I did not grow up with cats, my dad didn't like them. Too independent I think but that did not stop me from having cats (outdoor because Tom is highly allergic to cats). I have three cats before I got Mushu and Nala and they by far the most challenging. But everyone is surprised at how "use" to people they have gotten and I hope they continue to just get friendlier.

They will Pat as long as you keep doing the right thing like you are by respecting their comfort zones. They have no reason to feel threatened by you and that allows them to become more used to you and trust you.

Cats like to be the center of attention. They tend to find a way to position themselves between us and computer monitors, books etc. They are vain little creatures and take pleasure in making sure we know where they are and are focused where they want us to.

That saying" Dogs have masters,Cats have staff " Really is true..lol
