    spoon roast

ok, so I'm feeling a little self concious here. Contrary to what I post I don't eat roasts everyday. Somedays its simple fair like last night was mac and cheese using campbells cheddar soup as a base

But I love cooking Roasts and my local grocery store had bonesless spoon roasts on sale for $5.99 per pound. I COULDN'T RESIST.

I don't want to bore anyone or talk to myself here about it.. but omg.. what an incredible roast. And easy to make. I went out and bought another for the freezer.

I tried making one of these years ago that was much smaller and it was terrible. this was 6 lbs of heaven.

Anyone interested in the recipe and cooking , post and I will share.

      Hi Pat,
It was really good. Like having prime rib.
      Preheat oven to 400F

I started by taking the meat out of the refrigerator about 30 mins before cooking to warm it up a little. seasoned with Diamond crystal salt, coarse black pepper, and granulated garlic.. Letnthat sit a few mins while I prepare the roasting Pan. Cut up a few celery sticks and onion slices and place those in the pan. Place the roast on top . Spoon roasts have a fat cap which should be facing up. Mine was a little off balance and fell over during cooking but it made no difference. Before putting in the Oven add 1 cup broth. I used chicken as its all I had. Cook uncovered.

Place roast in oven at 400F for 20 mins.. then drop temp down to 350F . Cook 13-15 mins a pound for medium rare.

Remove from oven and let rest for 20 mins before cutting. While resting pour off the liquid to a saucepan..For gravy.. To make a quick gravy, add 2 tablespoons flour to a cup of cold water.. whisk thoroughly and add to ghe sauce pan.. heat and stir until it thickens. Enjoy!

Thanks Al and sounds delicious I will definitely give that a try. When buying the roost should I look for a particular label?

          Hi Pat,
This particular roast is called a "spoon" roast. Its basically from the top part of the Sirloin section on a cow. Any butcher should be able to point you to a spoon roast or cut you one. Its called a spoon roast as when its cooked perfectly it supposedly can be cut with a spoon.I think its probably an exaggeration or a sharp spoon, but it really is very tender.

Looks tasty! I had never heard of a spoon roast either, but google says it's a top serloin which I am familiar with. I have one on my freezer I may have to take cook up this weekend when the blizzard hits.

                  I cheated here and googled...

A spoon roast, known for being so tender it can be eaten with a spoon after slow cooking, is most commonly another name for a Top Sirloin Roast, also called a Sirloin Spoon Roast, with other less common names including Butcher's Roast, Honeymoon Roast, and sometimes a Rump Roast or Bottom Round cut when sold in the UK as "chomp," depending on the specific butcher's cut.
