Im shopping for a new frying pan today. I had a very Large Heavy one that was ages old and probably had some kind of Toxic coatings on it. Earlier today I had the brilliant idea of burning off that coating and re-seasoning the steel so I could use it for browning roasts and stuff. I have done this many times with cookware. You just take the pan and stick on some how coals until the junk seasoning and coating burn off.. then you steel wool it clean ,rinse,dry, coat with oil and re-season/bake on coating in the oven.

So why do I need a new Pan? Well that big old heavy Pan was not Steel like I thought.. only the handle was. And my wood stove proved to be a " tad" too hot.







Just goes to show you sometimes moderately smart people do some pretty stupid things.

On the bright side, made some interesting chunks of Aluminum nuggets.

Maybe consider a cast iron for that new skillet Al. Tom had a whole set of them and they last forever.

Hi Pat, I have a whole set of cast Iron pans and dutch ovens. I absolutely love them and use them alot. They are great at retaining heat and diffusing it. The benefit of steel (or aluminum)for what I need is that it heats fast and very hot. Perfect for searing and browning roasts and steaks before putting them in an oven ot crock pot. Its kind of a niche need in my kitchen.

We've all made mistakes like that once or twice Al. I think you just wanted a fancy new pan. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I've pretty much switched over to cast iron although I do have some of my old circulon pans I still use. I really like them and they're seasoned just right and are pretty much non-stick. I also got a new dutch loaf oven so I can make some sourdough in case I ever get my kitchen done. I got this brand new for $20 at an estate sale.

Well its 19F and we are heading out to the shoreline to see whats going on with the over wintering ducks. Its about time we start seeing them along the CT shoreline as the lakes ice over . Its not my favorite thing to photo but my wife really enjoys looking for the ducks this time of year so its a great thing for us to do together outdoors..

Thank god for wool is alls I will say...the seashore cold can really seep into you in the winter...but its always so beautiful and quiet its worth bundling up.

I got my first 4 from TFK Aquatics in January 2023 and then 6 more in February from Rodrigo from La Paz, so they are almost 3 years since I got them. The 4 from TFK were about 6 months old and the ones from Rodrigo a bit younger. I really don't know how many of each sex and they could be all males I never checked. It's hard to check since they all hide when I try. But based on behavior (females stay out of the caves and hang out on the sides.) I think 7 males and maybe 3 females. Not a good ratio but if I wanted better I should have bought more at the time. Cost is signifacant for a small young fish so that was a factor.

Oh man Al, that is cold and hopefully a dry cold. Hope you found those ducks. The ducks are showing up here in Florida. Saw several at the Orlando Wetlands a couple days ago.
