We have rain coming down now, maybe getting 1-2 " tonight, its alot all at once for bone dry ground but better than nothing I guess. My gardens will be happy for it. We really didn't have our typical spring rains at all this year, and aside from that leading into this drought its problematic for us with regards to gypsy moths..If the spring is wet enough heading into May here in the Northeast, theres a fungus that kills the gypsy moth caterpillars and controls bad outbreaks. That did not happen, so we will probably have some bad spikes in Gypsy moth populations. If this happens a few time in a row it can lead to wide spread defoliation which is real hard on trees already stressed from drought. I have seen it happen far too many times here. The sound of the caterpillar fraze( poop) sounds like rain when theres an outbreak.
What are you up to today???

Lmao!
Sorry Brian ! That's really frustrating!
I have had that happen too many times. I try to grow everything from seed now but even then I have gotten miss packages seeds like those hot peppers last year that were supposed to be sweet. Ticks me off when you spend so much time growing something and it ends up not what you thought it was.

Did you get a discount for being the fallback guy? If so, I think Ral Pabetta might need to call and order another cord of wood next week before cancelling last minute.
Is the bottom layer of splits just sacrificed sitting in the dirt like that?

I started this thread a long time ago. It's my favorite thread to watch, but since nothing interesting happens to me these days, I haven't had anything to post to it in a long time...Until today. The last few days have been excellent. Thanks for an unexpected infusion of money, I was able to buy a new refrigerator. My old one was given to me used, and I've had it for a good 10 years. God only knows how old it was, but although it was cooling acceptably, I didn't want to be left in the lurch when it gave up the ghost. It might have lasted another 10 years or died tomorrow.
Also, due to the "infusion," I was able to hire someone to clean house for me who, once the initial big cleaning was done, I'll be able to hire weekly for a more than reasonable price.
That's the background. Now for the fun stuff...
The lady I hired's FIL owns a place where they buy scrap metal. I gave her a ton of broken appliances and some stuff that was good, but I would never get around to using. What they didn't want, they could sell for scrap metal. She brought a truck and a small trailer and went away with so much that she had to come back today for the rest. One of the things I gave her was the old fridge. Her cousin's husband, who has stage 4 cancer, needed it. He has nothing. I also gave her a couple of fish tanks that her kids will enjoy, and a cheap meat smoker/grill that I never even put together.
These folks were so appreciative. So was I. I bought a portable AC for the fish room, but I couldn't even get it out of the box. They not only got it out of the box for me, but also hooked it up. A fish room is supposed to be warm, but when the temp goes above 82 I sweat. I've got it set at 80, and I'm comfortable.
I'm so happy with how all this is working out. I love giving stuff away to people who appreciate it. I don't have much to give away anymore, but I found someone who was delighted to take what I have, which also relieved me of stuff piling up that I considered junk. Everyone is happy now.

Lol.. no discount but $200 for a full cord of oak is a steal where I am.It took me a month to get the last cord last week so this was awesome for me.. The bottom row is usually junk wood...But I will still burn it ..in the winter it dries out so fast. I used to put it on lumber or pallets but then stopped as it really made little difference where it is.. It's always Breezy at the top of my yard and down right frigid in the winter with the wind coming off the farm fields. Lots of airflow and wood dries so fast. In a few weeks I will cover the top of the piles, set it and forget it. That's All I need to do here for cord wood.

Something I have learned is the truly generous people are the ones that have little as they know what it means to be in need. Giving a little when you have a lot is giving a little. Giving a little when you have little is giving a lot. Sounds like someone I know.
