Ok, it's a Woodpecker. Probably the one that's been waking me up early by making machinegun noises on the roof of my house every morning..

I know flickers *can* hammer at wood, but I think that's fairly uncommon. They're mostly a ground eater, I believe. I think they're my favorite birds. They're beautiful and when they take off they've got an awesome yellow (sometimes almost ornage) flash (as you can see from the feathers you found).

All About Birds says it's a pretty common woodpecker. I never knew the "flicker" part of the name. Now that I see images of them perched, and not in flight, I recognize them. There are several families of them living in trees all around my house. The one I got the feathers from may have been foraging on the ground because my feral cat isn't a climber.

What a gorgeous bird Brian Sorry the cat for it but it happens

On another note we closed on the new house. Next step is to get water and power on and now the hard work begins, moving and downsizing.

I am sure I will be enduring the same in a few years.

Thanks Chuck, 25 or so years ago we moved ourselves when we built the house we are currently in. Move distance was a block or so. Today Tom and I are a lot older and Tom's in a wheelchair so he is no real help. Move distance is a 40 min car ride. My son-in-law Mike will be our main moving guy. I am trying to talk him into the use of two men and a truck. Still under negotiation lol.

Yeah, they're a woodpecker, but they don't really... peck wood... at least not like other woodpeckers. It might be better classified as an ant eater. I think their pecking is mainly for nesting?

Somewhat related note, does anyone use the "Merlin" bird ID app? I downloaded it on my phone this winter, but there's not much bird activity when it's below zero. So recently there's been enough (lots) bird activity to use it and it's really cool. I'm learning bird calls, which is pretty cool. It's neat not having to go look up calls trying to figure out what I'm hearing. Highly recommend.

Merlin is an excellent app. My wife uses it every time we are out and about. It can really help Id a bird , especially useful when you hear it but don't see it well. Alot of Birders use it. I have it on my phone and sometimes will use it.

Maybe that explains why it concentrates on the metal exhaust vent on my roof above my bedroom every morning at 6am

Yesterday had hubby contact the FPL and city of Cocoa to turn on water and power at the new house. Power will be on today at some point and hopefully water soon. I was in no rush for the internet but Tom wanted to set it up so I am like whatever. lol. Next is how to convince my son-in-law Mike that two men and a truck is a good thing. I think Mike wants to move everything himself (with a friend helping) but he has his own stuff happening too!

5 Years ago when Peyton and I moved, we hired movers. I have 4 brothers who would have been more than willing to help, but I'm at the stage of my life where I'd rather pay someone to move for me than try and coordinate a day and time with brothers and put the strain of moving large furniture on everyone. The movers were worth every penny we paid them - two guys working from 3pm to 10pm was about $700 total and they put everything in the rooms they were meant to go in.

That said, I heard that good pizza and beer goes a long way to make moving a house easier.

I have a four day weekend (well, done to three days now). I had chipped and shredded down about 75% of the pile, but it just keeps growing. I can't keep up with this size of chipper, though it is making nice mulch.

Big front coming through tonight. It's been wildly windy all day but has really been kicking up this afternoon into the evening. So far no tornado warning, but we have severe thunderstorm warning until 2 AM. So we'll see.

Had a contractor here to talk about an additon on the house. That went fairly well. Fairly reasonably priced when not having them do the inside finishing work. I'm sure it has tripled in price in the last ten years, but, alas... I have no time machine.

Today I will be talk to my brother-in-law (Tom's youngest brother Frank) about going thru the new house and "fix" things. Frank is a mister fit-it-man and he does wonderful work. I have already sent him the house inspection report plus I have a few things to add. I am also going to run some groceries over to the new house so there is stuff to eat and drink for Frank and Mike.

I hear you Jake on the two men and a truck.
