That's interesting. The landowner tags are only $1 unless you buy multiple landowner antlerless tags, then I think they might be full price which is like $27. I don't know if there's a limit on the LOT or not for antlerless.
Good luck taking your kid! My daughter wants to go sit with me, I think I'll take her out tomorrow even though it's going to be 70 degrees. Today it felt like it was 75. I was working on my hoop house and it was very warm.

Sweet mate, sounds good. I will hunt youth gun w my son next weekend in the evenings. We don’t have to buy tags in Ohio when hunting as a landowner, but the county limits & state limit must be adhered too. Ohio is a 1 buck state, bag limit is 6. Our county has a 3 deer limit. 3 typically provides our red meat needs for the year

Thanks, Al!
Danny, I still have another buck tag and a doe tag (or two?), plus another late muzzleloader buck tag. Will hunt a bit more with my bow hoping for a real big buck. Otherwise will hope for a doe with the muzzleloader. We are set for meat for the year for our families, though. So it isn't necessary.😎 1Leave a comment:

Sounds good mate. No worries. I’ll do some small batch sticks to try to figure it out b4 I do a big batch. I started smoking meats this year so I’m excited to smoke our own venison sausage/sticks.
I steak the tenders & backstraps, keep the hind quarter muscle groups for whole for steak or roasting, and grind the rest. I have done a bit of whole muscle jerky but certainly haven’t perfect that. The state of my dentition makes it tuff to eat whole muscle jerky anyway
I also tried jerky made from ground w a jerky gun but didn’t like the texture.
Are you gonna try for another deer mate?

Yes, we process our own. Though I'd be lying if I said that it's not mostly my dad that does it. We grind the vast majority and dad also makes some whole muscle jerky. We don't usually make much/any sausage with deer. Though I know we have in the past. Occasionally we'll take a big batch of meat to a locker to have sticks made, but always enough that our meat is the entire batch so that it's not mixed with anyone else.
Doe is certainly better than buck meat, but because we mostly grind it up, I don't know that I could tell the difference. If I'm being honest.😎 1Leave a comment:

Haha, looks delicious mate. I didn’t say “too gamey”. Just a preference for doe or pre/post rut buck meat. Pretty distinct flavor difference, but still definitely worth harvesting & processing! In the 8 years I’ve been hunting I have killed and eaten (with gratitude) 3 ruttin bucks
Do you process your own venison? I do ours. Looking for a good nitrite free sausage recipe if you know of one, something to replace the “tenderizer” ingredient??

That is what my dad called it Danny. Basically with quail (or at least for us) we did not pluck the feathers off. We basically pulled the skin off the whole bird with the feathers attached. Then you separate the breast from the best of the bird and then saved the legs leaving the legs attached in the middle. Of course you had to cut away some of the gut sack etc to clean the legs.

Nice buck Jake! Beautiful shot, very clean & quick kill shot. Down in 40, can’t ask for more than that. Great story too. Love those beautiful sunrises from the stand/blind. Morning sits are amazing, pitch dark & silent to the sound of the wilds coming alive!
We have a gas easement that cuts thru our woods. House to the east, 180acres tilled field over back fence, and our finger of woods connects to an 800 acre state park. We’re very grateful to have found this 9.4acre property. I have 2 stands in trails in the woods. This is my blind set up. Any south or west wind is perfect. I have access through the edge of the woods to get in & out undetected.
I got a pretty decent doe 3 weeks ago at first light at my place. Broadside heart shot at 25yds, down in 30. Super easy recovery. The weather was cool so I was able to hang her for 4 days, then I processed her for 50# for the freezer, for which we are very grateful!
I do enjoy the meat from early or late season bucks, but I’m not a huge fan of buck meat harvested during the rut. Testosterone charged and extra gamey with that 20-25% weight loss from running all day long and getting dehydrated, but it is still healthy lean wild game meat, and definitely worth taking!
Next week we have a few morning temps in the 20’s so I plan to sit out and see what happens!Last edited by danotaylor; 11-07-2025, 09:15 AM.👍 1Leave a comment:

Thanks, Liz!
I've only ever seen quail in person a handful of times. I'd love to see them get established at our place, I'd think we have decent habitat for them. But I'm not sure there's enough of them around anymore to be able to spread.

Super nice looking buck there Jacob. I use to hunt with my dad, mostly bird hunting but I did clean my own gun and jerk the shirt off the quail. Quail is good eating. Miss those days!
