2 Free Ugly Duckling Blue Diamonds SF Bay Area

I have 2 ugly duckling blue diamonds that are too big to cull. They are about 4 inches, healthy, eating flakes, frozen bloodworms, colorbits. If you are a beginner wanting some experience with discus, or a kind soul wanting to give these fish a loving home, then they are yours for free!

Please pick up ASAP. No shipping on these fish. I'm located in San Mateo, just south of San Francisco. Send me a PM.

I know David, I know!!! LOL
They deserve to live.............in someone else's tank!!
Imagine if we culled all the ugly people in the world. The population would probably decrease in half!!

You know, I am really sorry here, but....

Discus that damn ugly should be destroyed for reasons any sensible discus breeder/hobbyist is painfully aware. Those genes ought never be passed onto another generation.

I know there are alot of bleeding heart do gooders who may disagree, but that's the painful truth. Too many fish like that end up as "legends". Just take a look on Aquabid if you have any doubts.

Destroy them please, for the sake of all of us who are trying to improve the discus lines we have. They are CULLS.

          Thank you,
          Mat

I don't necessarily think that they NEED to be culled. If there is a beginner out there who is looking for some experience with discus for the first time and is not looking to breed, then it is no big deal. I know that there are people looking to make the quality of the lines of all the discus better and culling is a must, but I don't see any problem if they won't ever breed ShinShin.

                RS21 -

The problem is crap discus are being bred every day and end up in the fish tanks around the world. These breed and there are more crap discus. Then a new discus keeper buys these fish, thinking that he/she has something and posts pics on the forums. Everyone says "nice discus", when in fact they should never have been left to live because people won't cull.

Take a look at Aquabid. Most of the discus there would be LFS grade discus. Not all, but alot of them. And, in reality, there should be no LFS grade discus. Suppliers ought to be delivering good quality discus to LFS's, too.

Just because somebody is "new" doesn't mean they shouldn't have decent discus in their tanks. There are plenty of hobbyists who breed decent fish and sell for reasonable prices.

                  Mat,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You could have fries from the best breeder in the world and if you don't take good care of them, those fish turn out to be low quality fish anyway. How can you control that? Also, breeding discus is not easy as 1+1=2 and raising fries is even harder. It takes time, hard work and patient. Not that many people can do it or want to do it.

                  Brigitte,
Those blue diamond look decent to me. Your terrible picture taking skill just downgrades the discus from a B grade fish to C grade fish. On top of that, I think you need a pair of glass :-). They are not like what you stated in the title of this post "Ugly Duckling". All 3 fish are doing fine in my 50 gallons quarantine tank. Thanks.

I would have to agree with Thai here Mat. I understand your concern about the overall quality of discus being bred and sold but honestly what are the chances that these couple of fish will breed and raise fry. I would say slim to none. I too would not have culled them as there are many people out there who would really appreciate owning these fish. I think giving these type of fish away will help bring some people into the hobby that wouldn't have started because of the high price of discus, and bringing new people into the hobby is always great.

Re: 2 Free Ugly Duckling Blue Diamonds SF Bay Area

There are two types of people with discus in their tanks. There are discus keepers and those that keep discus. Comments made on forum threads easily tell whom are whom.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is like the standard used in the courts of law that states one is innocent until proven. That doesn't mean a person is not guilty if not convicted. It's only the standard used. Likewise, because someone looks at a discus and thinks its beautiful doesn't mean that it is. There are standards for that, and sorry, but the two discus shown here don't make it. The origanal post was indeed correct - ugly ducklings.

I've kept and bred discus for more than a minute. I have also purchased many discus from breeders directly in the U.S.A. as well as indirectly from Asian breeders. I have received crap discus from many and quality from a few. Wattley sold me some of the best discus I have ever owned. I, in turn, bred some of the best discus I have ever owned from those fish.Cary of GLD has sold me some very high quality discus as did Lee at Seattle Koi and Discus. Ray Kosaka of the now out of business Discus Hawaii also delivered high quality Asian fish to me. I can't mention the bad fish and who sent them because of board policy, but those people were only out to make a buck.

Fred asked what are the chances of these fish being bred. I'd say very slim, but that doesn't mean fish of this quality are not being bred evryday when they, in fact, should have been culled in the beginning.

Does this all mean that only show quality fish should be kept and bred? No, but only good quality fish should be kept and bred. Cull the rest. Why, one might ask. To improve the quality of discus available and to bring down the price of quality fish. If "cull" grade fish were not available for $20-40 bucks a pop, breeders of higher quality fish couldn't justify $60-80 bucks a pop or more because their fish are twice as nice. Let's face it, it takes as much money to raise a cull as it does a quality fish.

                            Fred,
That's exactly what I have in mind, but you put it in better writing.

                            Mat,
Sometimes, on certain subjects, both sides are right with their reasons/opinions depending on what point of view you are looking at. You just have to choose and go with it. Hope there's no hard feeling here.

A little too far of the intent of the original poster don't you guys think?

Please feel free to continue your discussion in your own thread and We'll be happy to split the the topic for you.
