Hey everyone. I am brand new to the group and to this wonderful hobby of discus fishkeeping. Although I have been involved with tropical fish over the span of about 10 years, I only just recently (6 weeks appx.) started to get involved with discus. I always assumed they were waaaay out of my league with regards to maintenance, husbandry, etc. but I took the plunge recently and there is no looking back!!! Woo HOO!
Honestly, I don't know why I didn't do it sooner!!!! These fish are amazing and not TOO hard. The six (6) I have although more challenging than past fish I have kept; definitely within the realm of reality to do.
Anyways, I fell into the hobby by purchasing a couple of discus from a LFS in Orange County. Unfortunately, I am a buy first and research after kind of guy (I know...its horrible of me
), I realize there may be other really awesome ways to procure any more specimens (online, retailers). I understand LFS store just might actually be one of the last places you want to buy a discus :/ ... Crazy, it always felt wrong to consider having a fish shipped to me but...I am getting pretty comfortable with the idea. LOL
Well to make a long story short...when I get into certain 'things'..I'm addicted... and know I KNOW will be doing this indef. or unless I am in a situation that cannot allow me to engage this sport.
I am in the Long Beach/Los Angeles/Orange County area and I imagine there has to be some TOP SHELF breeders, enthusiast, groups etc. in my area but I just don't know how to navigate these waters yet!! ZINnnnnG!
It is Los Angeles though; I probably have like a few neighbors that are into these beautiful fish and I would really like to expand my base of knowledge and network.
Everyone on this forum seem super legitimate and helpful so if I would love to hear suggestions, comments, advice and anything else with regards to finding discus and anything discus related with relation to LB/LA/OC area. Thanks again, in advance!
