thanks Matt. Im really noticing that they seem much more at ease with the addition of more wooden pieces.

updated pictures of the changing scape. I am still waiting on one big clunky piece to sink in the aging barrel, but I have removed the piece with the java fern. some of these pieces are still have floating half sinking but I think it looks good. I do like it better without the fern. this is after a big water change and filter "cleaning" so the water is still a little cloudy.

Awesome discus and tank :)
Thanks Sidhartha. Still have some things going on in my head and still have one more piece of wood to add once it sinks, if it ever does sink. Then I want to add a big school of cardinals.
quick update and pic. I have ordered 50 cardinal tetras from John at FreshWaterTropicals and they will be arriving tomorrow to my qt tank. supposed to be XL so hopefully the discus wont eat them. The black neons in there are dwindling, just cant handle the heat, I plan to remove all the black neons and replace with the cardinals. here are a couple new pics, will update with cardinal pictures soon.

Very nice. I love that blue hue to them.
I like this layout, fantastic!
Just an FYI, I also ordered the jumbo cards from John and so long as you feed them several times a day while in QT they should get large enough not to get eaten when you transfer them to the discus tank. Mine grew incredibly fast!
I only lost about 8 of the smallest ones when they went to my main tank. The rest wouldn't fit into my largest discus' mouth so he finally gave up on his tasty cardinal snacks. LOL
thanks for the advice Toni, it seems as if my qt tank will house these cardinals much much longer than I had anticipated. :( The cardinals arrived today and are tiny. Needless to say I was more than disappointed since I ordered XL ones. Im not joking they are the size of chili raspbora. I've already been in touch with John and he apologized that he sent the wrong ones but for good reason bc his XL had a sickness. He did good by me and tried to make it right but my options were get 50 more fish when he has them (too many for my tank I think) or get my $ back (not fair to him I do not think.) So with no other options, I intend to grow these out in my qt tank until they are big enough to go in the main tank, hopefully they grow quickly but I suspect it will be quite a while before my school is added.
here they are, note that is size 12 font below the bag..........

not happy at all right now.
These are pics of the cardinals and rummies I have in my tank that also came from John. They pretty much arrived at that size as far as I can tell, maybe they put on a little bit more since I have had them a few months...
So sorry for your disappointing order :(
Thanks Phil for the kind words. I am pretty disappointed. Wasn't planning on having to grow these cardinals out. Truth is, I am not home enough to grow them out properly. I will only be able to feed them about 3 times a day.
You might be shocked at how quickly they grow - mine weren't all that much larger when I got them and within 3 weeks they were all well over an inch long (except for those pesky 8 little guys that got eaten)
They've been in my tank for 6 weeks now and are fully grown - around 1 3/4 inches.
I changed water daily and fed them 3 - 4 times a day. 2 feedings were discus flakes that I smushed between my fingers into a fine powder and the other 2 feedings were blackworms - also smushed into teensy bits and left to float on top of the water.
You could definitely put the finely smushed worms into the tank before you head to work so that they can graze on them as they get water logged and sink during the day, then feed twice at night and once in the morning with flakes.
