No more wild discus in US?
Hi folks,
There are two forum sponsors that used to import wild discus on a regular basis: Mark Chen (Discus Origins) and John Kreatsoulas (Snookn21). As some of you know, Mark has retired and there is no news from John since early December. I hope very much John is well (I always had great experiences with him). But if John goes out of business, we are left with no importers of wild discus in the US. Can you imagine that?

Re: No more wild discus in US?
The same thought has crossed my mind too! And to be honest, I'm pretty bummed out! Not that I bought a lot though. But when I want more where will I go?
I'm going to be in Naples Saturday & Sunday and was thinking of driving up to see if he is around and find something out.
I even had a fleeting thought that if I was retired I just found my new retirement job! But like I said it was fleeting!
The only other importer that I know of is Gabe Posada at Wattley Discus. He isn't a Sponsor here though and I don't know anything about him. And I hope I didn't just commit a sin by mentioning his name!

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Now that I think about it........at the NADA show in Chicago I made some runs to the airport to pick up people who were flying in. I picked up the 2 gentleman from Singapore who had entered a couple of Wilds in the show. If I recall correctly I think he won. I talked with him quite a bit because I have Wilds and He said he got that fish and some others from Gabe. I can't recall his name but I do have his business card at home.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
I just talked to Jeff Rapps @Tangled Up in Cichlids through email, he said that he may be bringing in some Peruvian wild discus next month. He is a top-notch vendor and I have used him several times for South American imports: geophagus, primarily.

Jeff is great. I actually have some Pterophyllum scalare 'Suriname' coming from him at the end of the week. Peruvian is better than none at all I guess but not really what I want.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Jack Wattley had some big wilds advertised and he had some nice videos of some on YouTube. ?? Not sure of the present stock

Re: No more wild discus in US?
I was thinking about this to and Gabe at Wattley Discus is the only one I know currently selling wilds. Kirbs is correct that Peter Lo's wild discus at the last NADA show came from Gabe.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
What about cardinal tetras? John had the best prices.

Re: No more wild discus in US?

That was Peter Low and he won 2nd place. First place was Kingdom Come (Kraig K) with a wild that came from John K.

Yup, I was one of those persons.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Maybe to find out who is importing it may be worth contacting directly the top Brazilian exporters and ask who they ship to in the US. You could try Victor Quaresma at Santarem Discus or Hudson Crizanto at H&K Discus

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Sounds like there's an import job niche out there for someone!

No one in the US currently imports from Hudson. Gabe Pasada (Whattley) imports from Santarem. Mark (Discus Origins) imported from WB Sabby but just retired from importing so no one is importing from Sabby. Those are the three big Exporters of Wild Discus.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
I purchased some wild peru greens through the wetspot before the holidays...Aquatic clarity and purefishworks has some wilds from time to time as well and I see wilds available at a few LFS in the area too though I do not know what wholesaler they are purchasing from. Sad to see that John is having problems but I can't say that any of my own experiences with purchasing with him were ever smooth as it took me weeks to get in touch with him through email and phone to the point that I was about to give up and I know I am not alone in my experiences. His shipping though was excellent and most (but not all) of the discus I purchased from him were of good quality and health.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Wilds are still available at the wholesalers,
Last months there were wild blue, green-
Peru, and wild Heckel-Nova.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
Sorry about the departure from importing wilds guys, but time and school started to compete with each other.
If anyone is serious about importing wilds as a wholesaler let me know and I will pass down my contact info for WBSabby.
But please only serious inquiries only, someone with an established facility/business and import permit. I don’t want to distract from WBSabby operation answering multiple inquiries with no actual desire for a minimum 6-8 box order.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
David Labell imported from Hudson last year. Was that a one-time thing?
I wouldn’t mind stepping in for John on a seasonal basis but I don’t know for sure what is going on with him and I’d hate to step on any toes.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
I think anyone that imports from Hudson or Hugo will learn it’s a one time thing lol. There’s just no comparison what photos they post on FB to advertise their ‘quality’ vs what you get from their back room after they get your money. Their best fish go to Europe while they try to get the same $$ from US....
WBSabby has been the most consistent, trustworthy supplier of wilds I’ve had and I went through all the ‘best’ in Brazil. They aren’t perfect but they always try to rectify things, while Hudson and Hugo will tell you somehow it’s your fault lol.
I don’t think you’ll be stepping on any toes, John and I did not compete for the same customers. He bought his fish from a wholesaler in Miami, I buy mine directly from actually fishermen catching and selecting them. Different quality and price points.
I’m not sure if he will be making it back but I hope so, financially he was always right on the fence and I’m not sure how far the hurricane damaged pushed him over.

Bay Area a few weeks ago.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
hmmm, It has been a while, but I imported wild discus for a number of years, the entire discus system is currently empty, I'm sure I could start it up again if the demand is there, I know two of my suppliers are still in business.

I think there is still a demand for wilds...the few I see in stores from time to time are usually pretty poor looking and emaciated for the prices they are charging. I myself am not interested in the super high end specimens and rare collection points as I just do not spend that much money on individual fish. I appreciated John's (snookn21) stock as he had wilds that were actually affordable at times for me while also offering some more expensive fish to those that wanted them. I would love to just see a more consistent offering of some of the more traditional wild type browns and greens again. I am not looking for specimens with necessarily perfect barring, eye color, etc....just healthy, and the way they patterned in nature as the domestic solid color and patterned fish that are so popular do nothing for me.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
I think there will always be a market for wilds and there will be people that sell them. Most Discus sellers whether they sell Domestics or wilds are here one year gone the next. Very few sellers survive. Its a hard industry that looks so tempting from the outside but is a royal pain most of the time. Not saying you cant survive... some sellers have figured out how to do it and do it well.
Btw..Jimmy has access to wild..
http://forum.simplydiscus.com/forumd...nto-California
What I would like to see is a concerted effort by hobbyists to breed wilds and offer their fry for sale. Its an area that as a hobby we have neglected, imo. Im not talking about buying the imported "wild" crosses.Im talking about just breeding these wilds we have locally .

Re: No more wild discus in US?
This thread is old but just wanted to mention Freshwater Exotics has a nice selection of wild discus right now. I just received some wild Santa Isabel angels from them. Nice quality fish and very good customer service.

Re: No more wild discus in US?
There is no issues on getting wild caught fish in Canada. I've ordered from this place many times over the years. He up puts the list every few days. If you live near the borded, just have them shipped to the border and come across and get them. http://cichlaholic.com/pdf/August%2018.pdf
