They will not turn into moths but when I had them a pest strip helped.
Lol.. definitely not turning into anything. But cultures can attract other critters like gnats that like to breed in the same environment.. thats probably what Cliff was suggesti g with the pest strip.
Liz, Im thinking the marina might be over kill.. maybe just" a little butter and garlic"...mmmm.

You guys are too funnyI had the same thought when I was picking the image haha
I was cultivating them years ago but read an article that they were very fatty and not good for discus so I stopped raising them.
I,m not sure where i read it as it has to be 40 or so years ago.

I have been keeping them for over 5yrs. Mostly for my reef tank, keeps the mandarin goby happy. I feed them to the discus also. No issues. They don’t do so well during hot summers. I keep mine in the basement. I feed the worms bread n yogurt.
Some great information here, thanks everyone![]()
For the LOVE of Discus!
Never had any luck with them, kept dying on me till I got a 2nd hand fridge and kept them at 50f now I make new boxes every month or so. never let them get as big as that photo, if it crashes no worms to make a new culture. Did here back in the BIDKA years that not to feed too many as they are very fatty?
They are said to be "fatty" but I dont know if thats really a practical concern. Beefheart mix is pretty fatty stuff and its fed all the time. Plus these things are so small I cant imagine the numbers of cultures you would need to feed a tank or two of discus.
Theres also the fact that we look for a high protein and fat ratio for.
Growth of fry and to condition breeders. IF i had the room in the frig I would not think twice about culturing them and feeding them.

So true, watch out if you put them in a food fridge, they have a habit of the young worms getting out of the fine holes in the tub.
When I had white worms hubby insisted to getting a dorm fridge so I had my own fish fridge lol
Personally I like my white worms lightly fried with flour and a wee bit of salt

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
Well today was worm day... 2 slices of whole meal bread and two spoons of yoghurt would put a sprinkle of yeast over the top but run out. I cut in half and then quarters to make 8 blocks per slice. Normally put 2 bits into a tub of establish worms and 1 for new start ups. A few photos and a few of the Jewels i'm trying to move on range from 1" to 4".

Brewmaster15, yes they are food airtight containers, I have put 1-2mm holes around the lid. I do sometimes get small black flies and I think they are called spring tails in the culture. Thought of putting some old tights materal over the holes to stop this but its finding some discarded tights...

White worms are an excellent source of protein but yes if fed all the time it may not be really good for your discus. I have had cultures of these for years and use to feed them to my discus once every other day. You shouldn't feed them as a main staple food in their diet. It is great food to condition your breeders. Yes there is a high fat content but nothing to worry about if you feed them once in a while.
I've been thinking about these worms since August 1st when this thread first started. Finally, I'm all set with a used wine cooler and the weather is cool enough for them to be shipped without them melting in the Mississippi heat enroute. They'll be here Friday and silly or not, I'm excited. I got them from this guy on AB even all the other folks selling them are way cheaper. I read all he had to say about what he says are myths about the temps these worms will handle. I'll stick with the wine cooler at first, but I'll experiment once I'm sure my cultures are going strong.
