Converting Whispers & Milleniums to Sponge
Has anyone converted Millenium and Whisper filters to sponge? What did you use? Is it just finding sponge that fits the compartments? Are they still effective? I've started changing over to A/Cs but I'd like to still use the other filters for smaller tanks and/or hospital tanks etc....but i'm tired of buying the throwaway filters? Thanks everyone in advance for your help...

JUST BUY AQUARIUM SPONGES FOR OTHER MAKES AND CUT WITH SCISSORS TO FIT.

Re:Converting Whispers & Milleniums to Sponge
Hi Ed,
I am using an older whisper filter that I converted to sponge. I did as Carol suggested, cut sponges to fit, then inserted them into the whisper "Bio-Bag". I used the plastic frames that came with the bio-bag to keep the whole thing rigid and slid them into the housing. I squeeze them out in old aquarium water, just like a sponge filter. They work great.

Looks good. Can't you just put the sponge alone in the filter?

The slot for the media in my filter is pretty narrow so the sponge wasn't thick enough (maybe 3/8" thick) to hold it's shape. When I added the plastic frame, it made everything rigid and fit the slot perfectly.

You can squeeze two of those triad sponge & frames into the Whisper filter's box. I've done that before (both Whispers were given to me - I prefer the Hagen aquaclears).
