My name is Daniel, I'm from Brazil and my story is very similar to Adamski77 (had aquariums as a kid, then in adulthood I moved a lot, and now I'm returning to the hobby). I've finally felt safe to get discus last christmas, so I bought some as my gift for myself . I bought 2 wild heckel, 1 pigeon blood (bought as a red marlboro, you know the drill...) and 1 I bought as an Asian Leopard, but I'm not so sure about it. On July I bought a "real" red marlboro, and on my birthday (September 20th) I got a good deal and bought a young yellow diamond and a young yellow checkerboard. Things were going really well, but in 2 weeks I lost 3 fish. I was really thinking about giving up these expensive fish and going back to cheap livebearers when I found this forum.
For now and as long as I have the energy to take care of my discus, I will seek guidance here. I'm autistic, so my hyperfocus helps in some ways, but I can't deal very well with frustration and I overthink a lot.
In a non related subject, did you know that here in Brazil we have a festival dedicated to discus and neon tetras? Search for "Festival do Peixe Ornamental de Barcelos". You're welcome
Daniel,
Welcome to the forum! Glad you found us! I would love to know how common wild discus are in petshops around you.
You were right to doubt the identity of the " Asian Leopard". Its definitely not a leopard just a Turq or possibly a tiger turq relative. What important is you like the fish. One note on when buy more ... You want to avoid ones that have a beak or pointed face. In many cases these fish will not grow well for you and if they do they just dont look as nice as discus should.
Thanks for the festival info.. I had no idea!

I live in south Brazil, so it's very far from where the wild discus are from. It's somewhat common to find wild discus here, but usually they're not so pretty, as the most pretty are exported.
Abou the "beak", I guess that it has something to do with him/her having survived a HITH case... But I will pay more attention to it if I get another, thks.
It's so nice to meet you, Daniel. My sister in law is from Brazil. She never told me about that festival. But she's a city girl from Rio so maybe she's never heard of it. Her son's inlaws are from the Amazon. His wife's father was a dairy farmer down there before he retired. We had the most interesting chat about breeding fish and breeding dairy cattle. He offered to find me some wilds, but I know the paperwork alone would have been more than either of us were up to.
I hope you enjoy yourself here. If you have any questions, just ask.
Welcome on board... glad to hear from people with similar stories. I joined this forum not really long ago but have to tell you there is tones of knowledge here... if you read, learn and apply these practices you'll be more then successful and these 3 you lost will be the last ones.
Fingers crossed for you... and thanks for pointing to the holiday... will read more about it...
